On Friday, Secretary Hegseth ordered commanders across the Department of Defense to designate a mandatory,one-day military “stand-down” prior to October 15.
The order is designed to give service members and their families the necessary time to register to vote, request absentee ballots, and cast their votes ahead of the crucial upcoming midterm elections.
In a video statement posted on X, Hegseth explained that voting for military personnel has been “time-consuming and complex,” as service members face unnecessary difficulties obtaining and returning absentee ballots while serving far from home.
Sec. Hegseth:
“So, we all agree that voting is important, number one. We all agree that, at the War Department, we serve the best citizens in the country---those who wear the uniform—number two. So, how about we make sure those who serve our country have every single opportunity to vote? Makes sense to me.
