The girls are beautiful, and their skills are real. But in all honesty, they feel like walking advertisements for whatever monetary endeavour YG wants them pursuing.⠀⠀
The songs are bland and uninspired, though strikingly in line with current pop music trends. They collaborate with massive American pop stars on soulless music that still functions well as a group of mindless party anthems. Everything is money, money, money and pretty, pretty, pretty with no actual personality or depth behind it.
Also a pet peeve of mine, but I hate how sexualised they are. As a female, I’m all for strong female role models in media. But with Blackpink, all I see is men drooling over their bodies and vapid, meaningless lyrics about sucking a guy off see the lyrics to ice cream. It makes me feel gross and used as a female listener. I think women definitely should feel free to sing about their sexual experiences, but there’s a massive difference between being a strong, confident women singing about sex, and being marketed and sold as a desirable product to men, with dick-sucking lyrics to boot.
