Esoteric words neither make us holy nor righteous; only a virtuous life makes us beloved of God. I would rather experience repentance in my soul than know how to define it.

—Thomas à Kempis, The Imitation of Christ

St.Petersburg

One’s life is a constant battle against destructive passions, an ongoing fight against the inclinations of the ego that are contrary to the wellbeing of the soul. If the flesh, as the Apostle Paul explains, is not constantly subdued, it will sway from the protection of the Lord’s Spirit that dwells within.

As sojourners in this world we must ensure that these passions do not orient us away from our heavenly destination. We must constantly hold ourselves in check to ensure that the body is not given liberty to rule over our being. And in every opportunity we ought to seek the grace of God in order to fight these inclinations and lessen the stronghold of our passions. In doing so we may deny any entrance, whether to the mind or to the heart for any of the passions, and rather keep ourselves holy and dedicated as the dwelling place of the Lord. For this is what is necessary to ignite the Spirit of the Lord within us.

“The will is truly free, when it is not the slave of vices and sins.”

—Saint Augustine

Try to live now in such a manner that at the moment of death you may be glad rather than fearful. Learn to die to the world now, that then you may begin to live with Christ. Learn to spurn all things now, that then you may freely go to Him. Chastise your body in penance now, that then you may have the confidence born of certainty.

—Imitation of Christ: Thoughts on Death

—Colossians 3:5 ESV

SEEK a suitable time for leisure and meditate often on the favors of God. Leave curiosities alone. Read such matters as bring sorrow to the heart rather than occupation to the mind. If you withdraw yourself from unnecessary talking and idle running about, from listening to gossip and rumors, you will find enough time that is suitable for holy meditation.

—Imitation of Christ: the Love of Solitude and Silence

“The greatest kindness one can render to any man is leading him from error to truth.”

—Thomas Aquinas
