BREAKING - GOLD NEVER DIES: U.S. TREASURY SECRETARY SCOTT BESSENT REIGNITES THE GOLD STANDARD DEBATE

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent just reignited one of America’s oldest monetary debates with a striking observation:

“Gold can’t have a fiscal problem… a deficit… a war.”

In a world dominated by rising debt, inflation and geopolitical conflict, the statement cuts directly to gold’s historic appeal: it cannot be printed at will, run a budget deficit or be created through government borrowing.

The question is obvious: Why is the Treasury Secretary talking about gold now and could the monetary system eventually shift back toward it?

GOLD: THE ASSET THAT NEVER DIES
For decades, gold has been dismissed as outdated or too restrictive for the modern financial system. Yet it remains one of the world’s most enduring stores of value.

Bessent’s point is simple: governments can accumulate debt, currencies can lose purchasing power and nations can finance wars, gold itself cannot.

That independence is precisely why investors and central banks continue to hold it during periods of financial uncertainty.

THE SYSTEM WAS ONCE BUILT AROUND GOLD
Bessent also pointed back to the monetary system that existed before President Richard Nixon ended dollar convertibility into gold in 1971:

“The entire global trading system… was tied to gold.”

For decades, gold played a central role in the international monetary order. Nixon’s 1971 suspension fundamentally changed that system, ushering in the modern era of fiat currencies.
Fifty-five years later, gold is once again at the center of the monetary conversation.

WHY GOLD — AND WHY NOW?
The timing is what makes Bessent’s comments especially interesting.

Governments are carrying enormous debt loads, concerns over inflation and currency stability remain, and central banks around the world continue accumulating gold. Against that backdrop, gold’s greatest advantage becomes increasingly obvious:

It carries no government’s credit risk.

Bessent even acknowledged the reputation that comes with such thinking:
“People might have called me a gold bug…”

Coming from the U.S. Treasury Secretary, those words inevitably raise questions about where the monetary debate could be heading.

55 YEARS LATER — IS GOLD RETURNING TO CENTER STAGE?
Bessent did not announce a return to the gold standard. But his comments revive a debate that never completely disappeared: What should ultimately anchor confidence in money?

Gold has survived empires, wars, inflation, financial crises and repeated transformations of the global monetary system.

And now, 55 years after America severed the dollar’s final link to gold, the Treasury Secretary himself is reminding the world why the metal has endured:
“Gold can’t have a deficit. Gold can’t have a war.”

The system changed.
Gold never did.
