EXPLOSIVE REPORT: SCOTT BESSENT ERUPTS OVER TARIFF REFUNDS — “THE AMERICAN PEOPLE HAD THE MONEY… AND WE WERE FORCED TO GIVE IT BACK”

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent blasted the tariff refund battle, arguing that the money was already in the U.S. Treasury before the government was forced to return it. He calls the outcome “corporate welfare” and says the Trump administration intends to fight to recover the tariff income.

Bessent’s central argument is simple:

“The American people HAD THE MONEY in the U.S. Treasury, and we were forced to give it back.”

He sharply criticized the Democratic attorneys general behind the lawsuit, rejecting claims that the refunds represented money being returned to ordinary Americans.

According to Bessent, the revenue was already held by the Treasury on behalf of the public. Returning it to the payer of record, he argues, instead creates:

“Corporate welfare.”

“THIS IS A CORPORATE BONANZA”

Bessent used Target and its Chinese suppliers to illustrate the problem. The government may not know what discounts or concessions an importer already received from suppliers, meaning a tariff refund does not necessarily reveal who originally absorbed the cost or who ultimately benefits from getting the money back.

That led to his blunt conclusion:

“This is a corporate bonanza, which I said it would be at the time.”

For Bessent, the dispute therefore comes down to a fundamental question: Who actually gets the money?

THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION ISN’T FINISHED

Bessent also made clear that the administration is not abandoning tariffs.

He pointed to Section 301, noting its long history of surviving legal challenges, and said the administration intends to use available authority to recover the lost tariff income.

The message is clear: even after being forced to issue refunds, tariffs remain central to Trump’s economic strategy, and the legal battle is far from finished.

At the center of Bessent’s argument remains one explosive statement:

“The American people had the money in the U.S. Treasury, and we were forced to give it back.”

For Bessent, this isn’t simply a dispute over tariffs. It’s a battle over who ultimately benefits - the American Treasury or the corporations receiving the refunds.
