HASTENING WHAT SHOULD BE HASTENED

Ali bin Abi Talib narrated that:
The Messenger of Allah said to him, "O Ali! Three are not to be delayed: solat when it is due, the funeral when it is presented, and (marriage) for the single woman when someone compatible is found."

Narrated by at-Tirmidhi
Grade: Dhaif (weak)
Translation adapted from sunnah.com

Lessons:
1. There are three things that need to be hastened by Muslims when the time comes

a) Prayer when it is called to
b) Funeral rites when someone has passed
c) Marriage of a woman when she has found a compatible man

Hasten what needs to be hastened.

LET’S MAKE SALAWAT

It was narrated that Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “Whoever sends salawat upon me once, Allah (SWT) will send salawat upon him tenfold”

Narrated in Ahmad, 12/520, no. 7561)
Grade: Sahih (authentic)
Translation adapted from sunnah.com

Lessons:
1. It is the indispensable duty of a Muslim to recite salawat upon Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) in abundance.

2. One recitation of salawat is equivalent to 10 good deeds.

3. The simplest salawat is as mentioned in Jami’ An-Nasae’i:

O Allah, grant peace upon Muhammad and his family.

INVOKING MORE SALAWAT ON FRIDAY

From Abu Umamah (May Allah be pleased with him) who reported:
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “Invoke more salawat upon me on every Friday, for the salawat of my Ummah will be presented to me on every Friday. Whoever haS invoked more salawat on me will be closest to me.”

Narrated in al-Baihaqi, Sunan al-Kubra, 3/249, No. 6208
Grade: Sahih (authentic)
Translation adapted from sunnah.com

Lessons:
1. One of the practices that one is encouraged to do on every Friday is to invoke more salawat upon Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ).

2. Those who invoke the most salawat upon the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), will be entitled to be closest to him.

Let’s invoke more salawat, especially on holy Friday.

Allah Loves Those Who Are Merciful

Abdullah bin 'Amr narrated that the Messenger of Allah said:
"The merciful are shown mercy by Ar-Rahman. Be merciful on the earth, and you will be shown mercy from Who is above the heavens. The womb is named after Ar-Rahman, so whoever connects it, Allah connects him, and whoever severs it, Allah severs him."

Grade: Hasan (Darussalam)
Reference: Jami’ at-Tirmidhi 1924
https://sunnah.com/tirmidhi/27/30

Lessons:

1. Allah is merciful to those who are merciful to others.

2. Those who are merciful towards creatures of the earth will be loved by the dwellers of the heavens.

3. Being kind and merciful to others are attributes of those with clean hearts and pure souls.

The disappearance of honesty

It was narrated from Ibn ‘Umar that the Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘When Allah wants to destroy a person, He takes away modesty from him, you will only see him with the wrath of Allah upon him, and he will be hated by people. When you only see him with the wrath of Allah upon him, and hated by people, then honesty will be taken away from him, and when honesty is taken away from him, you will only see him as a traitor who is called such by others. When you only see him as a traitor who is called such by others, then mercy will be taken away from him, and when mercy is taken away from him, you will only see him as rejected and accursed, and when you only see him as rejected and accursed, then the bond of Islam will be taken away from him.’

(Hadith translation taken from https://sunnah.com/ibnmajah/36/129)

Lessons:

1. One should preserve one’s modesty, as modesty forges the bond of Islam.

2. When one loses one’s modesty, other attributes follow suit:

a) he will be hated by others
b) he loses trustworthiness
c) he will be rid of mercy
d) he becomes among the accursed
e) eventually, he loses the bond of Islam

Let us preserve our faith by preserving our modesty!

THE MUNAFIQ (HYPOCRITE) FEELS HEAVY TO PERFORM SOLAT (PRAY) ISYA’ AND SUBUH IN CONGREGATION

Narrated Abu Huraira:
The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "No prayer is heavier upon the hypocrites than the Fajr and the `Isha' prayers and if they knew what is in them (in reward), they would have attended them, even if (by) crawling. Certainly, I felt the urge to order the Mu'adh-dhin (call-maker) so that he would pronounce Iqama, then order a man to lead the people (in prayer), then take a flame of fire so that I burn (the houses) upon those who had not left for the prayer yet."

Narrated in Sahih Al-Bukhari, Book 10, Hadith 51
Grade: Sahih
Translation: https://sunnah.com/bukhari/10/51

Lessons:
1. The most difficult solat for the munafiq (hypocrite) - i.e. to perform in congregation, at the masjid, is isya’ (the night prayer) and subuh (the morning prayer).

2. If one knew the reward of isya’ and subuh prayers in congregation, they would attend them (at the masjid) even though they had to do so by crawling there (because of pain or illness).

3. Rasulullah S.A.W. gave warning to the man who does not perform solat in the masjid without any justifiable reason by threatening to order the muadzin (call-maker) to pronounce iqama (the commencement of the solat), then ordering a man to lead the people in prayer, then taking a flame of fire to burn the houses of those who had left the congregational prayer.

Let us not have any characteristics of nifaq (hypocrisy) on ourselves. Let us try our best to maintain the isya’ and subuh prayers in congregation at the masjid. Do not let heaviness and laziness stop us from going to the masjid.

THOSE WHO ARE BEST IN CONGREGATIONAL SOLAT (PRAYER)

Narrated Abdullah ibn Abbas:
The Prophet (ﷺ) said: The best of you are those whose shoulders are soft in prayer.

Narrated in Sunan Abi Dawud, Book 2, Hadith 282
Grade: Sahih (Al-Albani)
Translation: https://sunnah.com/abudawud/2/282

Lessons:
1. Solat (prayer) in congregation is the best solat as one receives multiple rewards for it.

2. Among the etiquette (adaab) of congregational solat is straightening the rows (saf) and standing close together such that the shoulders of those next to each other meet.

3. He who is best is the one who prays standing in row and approximates his shoulders to those adjacent to him out of affection for them.

Let’s display softness towards those standing beside us in congregational solat.

THE STINGY PERSON

Ali bin Abi Talib narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:
“The stingy person is the one before whom I am mentioned, and he does not send Salat upon me.”

Jami at-Tirmidhi 3546, Book 48, Hadith 177
Translation adapted from sunnah.com

Lessons:
1. Be generous.

2. The stingy person is the one who does not make even one salawat (prayer) upon the Prophet (ﷺ) when he is mentioned.

Let’s make salawat upon our Prophet (ﷺ). Keep ourselves from being stingy.

RECITING SALAWAT AT LEAST ONCE IN A GATHERING

Abu Hurairah [may Allah be pleased with him] narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) said, “When someone makes salawat once upon me in a gathering, it is therefore sufficient for that person throughout the gathering”.

Reference: Sunan at-Tirmidzi

Lessons:
1. A blessed gathering or congregation is one where Allah is remembered and salawat is made upon Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ).

2. One salat (the singular form of salawat) upon His Prophet (ﷺ) in a gathering or program is already sufficient.

3. Increasing our salawat upon His Prophet (ﷺ) is encouraged at all times.

AVOIDING GATHERINGS OF SADNESS AND REMORSE

Abu Hurairah [may Allah be pleased with him] narrated that:
The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “No group gathers in a sitting in which they do not remember Allah, nor send Salawat upon their Prophet (ﷺ), except it will be a source of remorse for them. If He wills, He will punish them, and if He wills, He will forgive them.”

Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3380, Book 48, Hadith 11
Grade: Sahih (Darussalam)
Translation adapted from sunnah.com

Lessons:
1. A Muslim should try his best to ensure that whatever social gathering or program he/she attends is graced by Allah’s blessings.

2. A gathering that receives blessings by Allah is one where He is remembered and salawat (prayer) is made upon Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). Even if only one person in the whole gathering were to remember Allah and his Prophet (ﷺ), it would suffice.

3. A gathering without the remembrance of Allah and His prophet (ﷺ) is bereft of cheer.

4. Such an occurrence may invite Allah’s disapproval and punishment.

Let’s ensure that remembering Allah and making salawat upon Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) is made part of the gatherings we attend.

THE BEST DEED IS PRAYER EARLY IN ITS TIME

Umm Farwah - and she was one of those who gave pledge of allegiance to the Prophet - narrated:
"The Prophet was asked, 'Which deed is the best?' So he said, 'Salat (prayer) in the beginning of its time.'"

Reference: Jami’ at-Tirmidhi 170
In-book reference: Book 2, Hadith 22
English translation: Vol. 1, Book 2, Hadith 170
Grade: Sahih (authentic)
Translation adapted from sunnah.com

Lessons:
1. A priority for Muslims is to conduct prayer (solat) at the beginning of its allotted time.

2. Establishing solat should be hastened and Muslims should not be negligent in this matter. Illness and death are unpredictable; it would be very regrettable to have put off solat when the time to pray has come and then passed away doing so.

3. Those who neglect solat will be thrown into the hell Wail.

Al-Maun:4-5

So woe unto those performers of Salât (i.e. the hypocrites), (4) Those who delay their Salât (prayer from their stated fixed times), (5)

- Translation by Dr. Mohsin, Quran Explorer

Saidina Abbas explained : Wail is a valley between two mountains in Hell. It is a dwelling place for those who delay salat.

Let us make solat early on in prayer times.

PRAYER AS THE DIVIDER BETWEEN FAITH AND DISBELIEF

Abi Sufyan narrated that Jabir heard that the Apostle (may peace and blessings be upon him) saying, “Verily between man and polytheism (shirk) and unbelief (kufur) is the negligence of prayer.”

Reference: Sahih Muslim 82a
In-book reference: Book 1, Hadith 153
USC-MSA web (English) reference: Book 1, Hadith 146 (deprecated numbering scheme)
Grade: Sahih (authentic)
Adapted from sunnah.com

Lessons:
1. Prayer (solat) is one of the pillars of religion. Whosoever performs the solat, he establishes his religion. Whosoever abandons the solat, he demolishes his religion.

2. The difference between a Muslim and disbeliever is solat.

3. Allah throws those who deliberately abandon solat into the hell Saqar.

Surah Mudatsir: 42-43

"What has caused you to enter Hell?" (42) They will say: "We were not of those who used to offer the Salât (prayers)." (43)

- Translation by Dr. Mohsin, Quran Explorer

4. According to Imam Nawawi, those who abandon solat by rejecting or denying the obligation/legislation of salah, are considered disbelievers.

5. If a person abandons solat due to laziness or negligence, but still attest to the obligation of performing salah, Imam Malik and As-Syafiee decreed that the person is not a disbeliever, but regarded as a fasiq (one who transgresses boundaries set by Allah). That person shall be advised to repent. If the person refuses to, then he could be sentenced to death according to hudud.

Let us take care of our solat, which is the difference between a believer (mu’min) and a disbeliever (kafir).

PERFORMING ABLUTION BEFORE GOING TO SLEEP

It was narrated from Mu’adh bin Jabal that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:
“There is no person who goes to bed in a state of purity, then wakes up at night, and asks Allah for something in this world or the Hereafter, but it will be given to him.”

Reference: Sunan Ibn Majah 3881
In-book reference: Book 34, Hadith 55
English translation: Vol. 5, Book 34, Hadith 3881
Grade: Hasan (sound)
Translation adapted from sunnah.com

Lessons:
1. Among the etiquette of retiring to bed for a Muslim to observe is performing ablution (wudhu').

2. A Muslim who sleeps in a state of purity and then wakes up to ask Allah for something in this life or in the Hereafter will have his/her supplication (du'a) granted.

Perform wudhu' before going to sleep and wake up at night to get closer to Allah. Let's seize the opportunity to make du'a for this life and for the Hereafter during the best time to call to our Maker.

WOE TO THOSE WHO FAIL TO WASH THEIR FEET PROPERLY DURING ABLUTION

'Abdullah b. 'Amr reported:
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) lagged behind us on a journey. We travelled (back) and took him; then came the time of the afternoon prayer, and as we were going to wipe our feet he (the Holy Prophet) called out: Woe to the heels because of Hell-fire.

Reference: Sahih Muslim 241c
In-book reference: Book 2, Hadith 39
USC-MSA web (English) reference: Book 2, Hadith 470
Grade: Sahih (authentic)
Translation adapted from sunnah.com

Lessons:
1. Ablution (wudhu') is one of the pre-requisites for validity of prayer.

2. Among the body parts which need to be washed thoroughly during ablution are the feet, from the ankles to the bottom.

3. Woe to those who perform ablution but the water fails to reach all the parts of the feet, such as the heels.

Let’s ensure that when we perform ablution, all the parts of the feet are washed, including the ankles and heels.

DU’A WILL BE ANSWERED BY RECITING SALAWAT

“Every du’a remains unanswered until one sends blessings upon the Prophet (ﷺ)”

As-Saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Jaami’, no. 4523
Grade: Sahih (authentic)
Translation adapted from Islam: Questions And Answers - The Heart Softeners (Part 2), p. 41

Lessons:
1. Sending salawat (salutations upon the Prophet) is among the signs that we truly love the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ).

2. Sending salawat is also part of the etiquette of making du’a.

3. The basis for du’a being answered is sending salawat.

Let us increase salawat in du’a! An adage of the wise goes, “one always utters what one loves”.

DUA’A WILL BE GRANTED BY GLORIFYING ALLAH AND MAKING SALAWAT

Fadalah bin Ubaid narrated:

“While the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was seated, a man entered and performed Salat, and he said: ‘O Allah, forgive me, and have mercy upon me.’ The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘You have rushed, O praying person. When you perform Salat and then sit, then praise Allah with what He is deserving of, and send Salat upon me, then call upon Him.’ Then, another man performed Salat after that, so he praised Allah and sent Salat upon the Prophet (ﷺ). The Prophet (ﷺ) said to him: ‘O praying person! Supplicate, and you shall be answered.’”

Jami at-Tirmidhi 3476, Book 48, Hadith 107
Grade: Hasan (Darussalam)
Translation adapted from sunnah.com

Lessons:
1. Starting a dua’a by thanking and praising Allah is part of the etiquette of making dua’a.

2. This is followed by sending blessings and salutations (i.e. salawat) upon the Prophet (ﷺ).

3. When a Mukmin’s dua’a begins with praises to Allah before salawat upon His messenger (ﷺ), all his dua’a (supplications) will be answered.

Let’s start our du’a by glorifying Allah and sending salawat upon our beloved Prophet (ﷺ) before praying for whatever we desire. Similarly, du’a should be ended by salawat and then praises to Allah.

INCREASING SALAWAT IN DUA’A

At-Tufail bin Ubayy bin Ka'b narrated from his father who said:

Ubayy said: "I said, 'O Messenger of Allah! Indeed I wish to increase my Salat for you. How much of my Salat should I make for you?' He said: 'As you wish.' I said, 'One-fourth?' He said, 'As you wish. But if you add more it would be better for you.' I said: 'Then half?' He said, 'As you wish. And if you add more it would be better [for you].’ I said, 'Then two-thirds?’ He said, 'As you wish, but if you add more it would be better for you.' I said, 'Should I make all of my Salat for you?' He said, 'Then your problems would be solved and your sins would be forgiven.'"

Jami` at-Tirmidhi, Vol. 4, Book 11, Hadith 2457
Grade: Dha'if (weak, Darussalam)
Translation adapted from sunnah.com

Lessons:
1. We are enjoined to follow in the footsteps of the Prophet’s (ﷺ) Companions.

2. Ubayy ibn Kaab was among the Prophet’s (ﷺ) Companions who would make abundant salawat (salutations upon the Prophet) every day.

3. To include as many salawat as possible upon the Prophet (ﷺ) is part of a Mukmin’s etiquette in making dua’a.

4. The number of salawat is not defined – the more, the better.

5. When a Mukmin’s dua’a is wholly formed by salawat, all his concerns will be taken care of and all his sins (minor sins) will be forgiven.

Let us all increase salawat upon the Prophet (ﷺ) in our dua’a!

OBTAINING FORGIVENESS FOR SINS BY PERFORMING ABLUTION

Narrated Humran: Uthman RA asked (for a tumbler of water) to perform ablution (and when it was brought) he demonstrated how the Prophet performed ablution. After that, Uthman said, ‘I saw the Prophet (ﷺ) performing ablution like this of mine, and he said, “If anyone performs ablution like that of mine and offers a two-raka’at prayer during which he does not think of anything else (not related to the present prayer), then his past sins will be forgiven.”’

Narrated in Sahih Bukhari, no 164
Grade: Sahih (authentic)
Translation adapted from sunnah.com [https://sunnah.com/bukhari/4/30]

Lessons:
1. Perform ablution as best as possible.

2. Those who perfect their ablution and follow it with two raka’ats of prayer will have their past sins forgiven.

Let’s perfect our ablution and habitualise performing two raka’ats of prayer thereafter.

THE AMOUNT OF WATER TO BE USED IN ABLUTION

Anas said: The Apostle of Allah (ﷺ) performed ablution with one Mudd and took baths with a Saa' up to five Mudds.

Narrated in Sahih Muslim, no 325b
Grade: sahih (authentic)
Translation from sunnah.com [https://sunnah.com/muslim/3/59]

Lessons:
1. Islam teaches us to conserve water when performing ablution

2. One Mudd is roughly equivalent 750 ml of water. One Saa’ is roughly equivalent to 3 liters of water.

3. The Prophet SAW would perform ablution with only 750ml of water and bathe with roughly 3 liters (a tradition that we should follow to conserve water).

4. Al Marwazi RH said: When Imam Ahmad performs ablution, almost no water falls onto the ground/the area in which he performs ablution.

Let us be vigilant of our water usage. If there is a limit to the amount needed for ablution and to bathe, then what more for any other purpose. Conserve water!

THE AREAS OF ABLUTION WILL RADIATE ON THE DAY OF JUDGMENT

Narrated Nu`am Al-Mujmir: Once I went up the roof of the mosque, along with Abu Huraira. He performed ablution and said, "I heard the Prophet (ﷺ) saying, ‘On the Day of Resurrection, my followers will be known as ghurran muhajjalin (radiant and beautiful) by virtue of the traces of ablution, and whoever can increase the area of his radiance should do so (i.e. by performing ablution regularly).' "

Narrated in Sahih Bukhari, no 136
Grade: Sahih (authentic)
Translation from sunnah.com [https://sunnah.com/bukhari/4/2]

Lessons:
1. Every Muslim is encouraged to always be in a state of ablution.

2. Those who regularly perform ablution will be resurrected on the Day of Judgement with radiant faces as a result of the ablution they used to perform in this world.

3. It is recommended to exceed the area of ablution so as to maximise its coverage because we shall then be resurrected in the hereafter with the radiance of those parts. The greater the area that is washed, the greater the area that shines.

Let us work on our ablution, perfecting it, and let us always strive to be in the state of ablution.
