🇯🇵🇺🇦 Japan, Ukraine sign security info-sharing pact to boost cooperation

Japan and Ukraine signed an accord to facilitate the exchange of classified security information in the latest bid to ramp up cooperation.

Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya told reporters that the bilateral agreement on information security will be "a basis" for intelligence sharing between the two governments.

Iwaya also agreed with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha to launch a high-level security policy dialogue involving senior foreign and defense officials, which he said is intended to boost defense coordination.

Lin Hsin-i, Taiwan's representative at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum in Lima, said that he greeted China's President Xi Jinping with a wave, but there was no handshake or conversation.

The forum is one of the few international meetings both Taiwan and China take part in, and where officials from the two sides can interact, even if just to exchange pleasantries.

Speaking at a press conference, Lin, chairman of government-backed investment fund Taiwania Capital and also a former economy minister, said that while Taiwan had bilateral talks with many APEC members, with Xi there was just a greeting gesture across the room where leaders were gathered.

Japanese troops will begin regular deployments in northern Australia as part of military cooperation with Australia and the US, Australia's Defense Minister Richard Marles said.

"Today we are announcing that there will be regular deployments of Japan's amphibious Rapid Deployment Brigade to Australia," Marles said at a televised press conference in Darwin, alongside US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and Japanese Defense Minister Gen Nakatani.

"Having a more forward leaning opportunity for greater training with Japan and the US together is a really fantastic opportunity for our defense," Marles told Sky News on Sunday.

China's President Xi Jinping told his US counterpart Joe Biden that the issues of Taiwan, democracy, human rights and rights to development are "red lines" for China and not to be challenged, the official state media Xinhua said on Sunday.

Xi warned the United States not to get involved in bilateral disputes over islands and reefs in the South China Sea or "aid or abet the impulsion to make provocations" in that region, it said.

China and United States would roil or even see relations take a setback in rivalry with each other, but could make considerable progress by treating each other as partners and friends, Xi told Biden on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic forum summit.

🇨🇳🇺🇸 Xi says he will work with Trump team as he meets Biden in Peru

Chinese President Xi Jinping vowed on Saturday to work with the incoming US administration of Donald Trump as he held his final talks with outgoing President Joe Biden on conflicts from cyber crime to trade, Taiwan, the South China Sea and Russia.

Biden met Xi for about two hours at a hotel where the Chinese leader was staying, on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum in Lima, Peru, for their first talks in seven months.

"China's goal of a stable, healthy and sustainable China-US relationship remains unchanged" after Trump's election, Xi said as he met Biden, acknowledging "ups and downs" between the countries. "China is ready to work with the new US administration to maintain communication, expand cooperation and manage differences."

The leaders of Japan, the United States and South Korea announced the creation of a secretariat to further align their policies and actions, about two months before US President-elect Donald Trump returns to power with his go-it-alone approach to foreign affairs.

Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, US President Joe Biden and South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol, who met in Lima on the sidelines of an international meeting, said the new entity will make the Indo-Pacific "a thriving, connected, resilient, stable, and secure region."

While it remains to be seen whether Trump will support the format, the Japanese Foreign Ministry said the three leaders discussed major regional issues, including North Korea and unilateral attempts to change the status quo.

South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol told Chinese President Xi Jinping that their two countries should cooperate for peace in the face of North Korea and Russia's military cooperation, Yoon's office said.

Yoon expressed his hope that "South Korea and China will cooperate in promoting stability and peace in the region in response to North Korea's successive provocations, the war in Ukraine, and Russia-North Korea military cooperation."

Yoon also called for the two countries to further strengthen cooperation in the economic sector, which he called "the central axis of bilateral relations over the past 30 years."

The defense ministers of Australia, Japan and the United States will meet in the Australian city of Darwin on Sunday to discuss continued military cooperation, Australia's Defense Minister Richard Marles said.

Marles, Japanese Defense Minister Gen Nakatani and US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin will discuss cooperation in exercises, operations, technology and defense industry among other things, according to statement from Marles' office.

Sunday's meeting in the capital of Australia's Northern Territory would be the 14th of its kind between the three nations, it said, adding that bilateral meetings would also be held with each country.

Chinese President Xi Jinping told Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba in their first meeting that China hoped Japan would "properly handle" major issues such as history and Taiwan.

Xi called for the two Asian neighbors to safeguard the global free trade system, as well as stable and unimpeded production and supply chains, as they met on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum summit in Lima, Peru.

Ishiba told Xi he wanted to build a "constructive and stable" relationship but asked him to reverse an import ban on Japanese seafood and strengthen safety measures for Japanese nationals in China after recent fatal stabbings, and expressed concerns about Chinese maritime activities.

Taiwan's representative at an Asia-Pacific summit met US President Joe Biden on Friday and invited him to visit Taiwan in the near future, with the two men having a "lively" exchange of views, the island's delegation to the summit said.

The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum is one of the few international meetings both Taiwan and China take part it, though Taiwan does not send its president, given China's objections.

Meeting on the sidelines of APEC summit in Lima, Taiwan's representative Lin Hsin-i thanked Biden for his contributions to promoting U.S.-Taiwan relations over the past four years.

Malaysia will send a protest note to the Philippines over its new maritime laws due to their overlapping claims in the South China Sea, its deputy foreign minister said.

The protest will follow a complaint also from China over the Philippines' Maritime Zones Act and the Archipelagic Sea Lanes Act, which Manila said was intended to strengthen its maritime claims and bolster its territorial integrity.

Malaysia's Deputy Foreign Minister Mohamad Alamin said the government has reviewed the reference documents related to the Philippines' laws and found that they touch upon claims to the Malaysian state of Sabah on Borneo island.

US, Japanese and South Korean naval forces exercised together in East Asian waters in their most complex and final joint drills before President Joe Biden hands over one of his signature national security initiatives to Donald Trump.

Led by the USS George Washington carrier and its jet fighters, the Freedom Edge naval exercise in waters south of the Korean peninsula and west of Japan's main islands comes after a pact brokered by Biden in 2023 in which Seoul and Tokyo put aside years of mutual animosity and agreed to trilateral security cooperation with Washington.

Further exercises are planned next year, although neither Trump or his pick for Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth have yet to outline their national security plans in the East Asia region on Beijing's doorstep.

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto said he would "always safeguard our sovereignty" when asked about the issue of the South China Sea, adding partnerships are better than conflicts and that "we respect all powers".

Prabowo's comments, made while he was in Washington, came after his foreign ministry stressed that Indonesia does not recognize China's claims over the South China Sea despite signing a maritime deal with Beijing last weekend.

Prabowo met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing on the weekend. A maritime development deal signed by China and Indonesia said they had reached common understanding "on joint development in areas of overlapping claims."

According to Reuters sources, Taiwan President Lai Ching-te is planning to stop in Hawaii and maybe Guam on a visit to Taipei's diplomatic allies in the Pacific in the coming weeks.

A stopover in the US territory of Guam was also being discussed, four of the sources said. Both Hawaii and Guam are home to major US military bases.

Two of the sources said that the stopovers would be part of Lai's visit to Taiwan's diplomatic allies in the Pacific. One person familiar with the US leg said they expected Lai's visit to be lower key than usual and that logistics are still being worked on.

Kim said the competition for using drones for military purposes is accelerating around the world, with military authorities likely recognizing their success in conflicts of various scale.

China said on Friday the Philippines had sent supplies to a beached warship on Second Thomas Shoal, a disputed atoll in the South China Sea.

In a separate statement, the Philippine Coast Guard said it had rotated personnel staffing the Sierra Madre and sent supplies to the vessel.

China's Coast Guard said the supply run had proceeded "with permission" to what it considers an "illegally" beached ship. The Philippine Coast Guard had no immediate response to China's claim, which it has previously made, that it had allowed the mission to proceed.

With Donald Trump’s election victory sparking expectations of steep tariffs, US importers are expected to rush to front-load goods from China even before January’s inauguration to sidestep potential cost increases and deliver a surprising boost to Chinese exports.

In the long term, analysts said the direct damage to China’s economy caused by any potential tariff increases would be modest, although cumulative tariffs could hit exports.

Economists at London-based Capital Economics estimated last week that the direct damage of large US tariffs on China’s economy would probably be less than 0.5% of gross domestic product, as exporters can bypass tariffs via other countries and also receive support from depreciation of the yuan.
