Inside the 'hellhole' northern village where refugees are being 'dumped' by London councils as fed-up locals say 'we've been forgotten'

Fed-up locals say their village has become a 'hellhole' and a 'dumping ground' for refugees for councils in London.

Anti-social behaviour and crime have become so extreme in the village that, in the past, bus drivers refused to stop in the area.

While a YouTuber visiting the area harshly branded it a 'Victorian slum'.

It comes as towns and villages across County Durham are becoming home to an increasing number of refugees who are reportedly moved up to the North East of England by councils in the south.

Cheap housing in deprived towns and villages - where properties are known to sell for just £5,000 - make them prime locations for councils to place migrants in the hands of private landlords.

MP Rosie Duffield resigns Labour whip over ‘hypocrisy and cruel policies’

Canterbury MP Rosie Duffield has resigned the Labour whip, accusing the Prime Minister of “hypocrisy” and pursuing “cruel and unnecessary” policies.

In a resignation letter, Ms Duffield attacked Sir Keir Starmer’s decision to keep the two-child benefit cap and means-test winter fuel payments and condemned his handling of the outcry over gifts given to him and other senior Labour figures.

Keir Starmer hits new low in personal popularity ratings

Even before the Labour gathering in Liverpool – originally billed as a chance to celebrate its return to power after 14 years – Starmer’s ratings had collapsed 45 points since July to -26 by last weekend (with 24% approving of the job he was doing, against 50% who disapproved). Conference week, however, saw a further drop of four points to -30, by far the lowest he has ever recorded.

MPs have declared more than £6m in ‘freebies’ since 2010, analysis shows

The value of “gifts, benefits and hospitality” declared by MPs was £1.3m in 2023, analysis shows, up from £483,507 in 2021. And the amount of gifts increased to 768 from 337 during the same period.

But the sum total of gifts will be even higher because the figures do not include those received by ministers, who are not required to declare them on the register of MPs’ interests. Nor does it factor in interest-free seven-figure loans made to parliamentarians.

Figures show that almost half of all the donations accepted by MPs since 2010 were given in the last two years. They included tickets for football matches and concerts, badges for horse race meetings, honorary club memberships, helicopter rides and payment of legal fees.

The MP who had declared the most gifts and hospitality items since 2010 was Laurence Robertson, the former Tory MP for Tewkesbury, who lost his seat at the last election. He accepted 88 gifts worth £81,913.53. Forty-nine of those came from betting companies, with a further 32 coming from horse racing companies.

Keir Starmer meets Donald Trump in push for good relationship

Keir Starmer has met Donald Trump for a two-hour dinner in New York, as he sought to establish a good relationship with the Republican presidential candidate.

The prime minister was accompanied by his foreign secretary David Lammy, who described Trump as a neo-Nazi sympathiser in 2018 but has since said he would work with him in office.

Prior to the meeting, Starmer told reporters: “I’ve said a number of times, I want to meet both candidates. We’ve now got the opportunity to meet Trump, which is good. Obviously, I still want to speak to Harris as well.“

If only we could find out what they talked about.
