Pro Tip for Mains

Most CSE Toppers emphasise on writing as many points(dimensions) as possible in GS answers.

A popular approach is to write at least 10 points in a 10 marker and at least 15 points in a 15 marker.

Writing these many points in those 7 and 11 minutes require you to write shorter sentences.

The best possible way of writing such short sentences is to use subject specific keywords.

Keywords can be best compiled through the daily newspaper and from topper copies.

Since 2020, I have been scoring 20 to 45 above the Prelims cut offs ( See My Marksheet of 2022 in pinned message)

Those who have appeared in Prelims Know that

The Monthly Current Affairs magazines and yearly compilations don’t really help: I stopped doing them in 2019 and replaced them with only daily Newspaper.

Magazine coverage consumes time and energy that could be better spent on basic books and mock tests.

The daily newspaper has been, and will remain, the best source for preparing current affairs for Prelims.

You should devote 1.5 to 2 hours daily to reading the newspaper to improve your performance in both Prelims and Mains.

To help you with covering the daily newspaper effectively for Prelims and Mains, I am posting important articles along with guidelines of what to extract from them.

These Articles are posted in this channel

As was mentioned in this post, there is favorite theme of UPSC every other year and they ask questions on this theme in every GS paper.

Generally, there is a lag of 1-2 years between a theme appearing in the news and it being picked up for Mains.

Generative AI has gained prominence this year and could become a favorite theme next year in Mains and Prelims.

Pro Tip for Mains

I was discussing with Pritam(AIR 9, CSE 2021), regarding his process for attempting all questions in time.

He said that after attempting a lot of mocks when he was attempting the paper in the actual mains exam..

His practice had allowed him to calculate time in his mind not through the watch but through the number of pages that he had filled.

Through his practice in Mocks, he knew that if he had finished one page a 10 marker, with a particular speed then it meant that 4 minutes have been consumed. If he was writing a bit slow then he would automatically know that it probably is 4:30 minutes.

If you know your handwriting speed well, then your mind has an inbuilt clock that will tell you how much time is left.

Yes it requires a lot of practice though.

You can watch from this video what to do to finish the paper on time and attempt all questions(CLICKABLE LINK)
