“Gratitude is not only the greatest of virtues, but the parent of all others.” - Marcus Tullius Cicero
Moments of gratitude are ingredients to a happy life. This is one such moment, as I recently passed the milestone of 20 years at Amazon (the Silver Badge anniversary). I am grateful for +many+ aspects of this company that have fueled this two-decade run, but in particular would point to a culture of mentorship, mobility, and invention.
I'd always hoped my career would serve as an extension of my business studies, and I've had several inspiring mentors at Amazon who have made that a reality -- many of whom I consider the best and brightest business minds, bar none. I’ve valued our culture of mentorship and have worked to give back to it. While all my Amazon mentors are too numerous to list here, I want to particularly thank Bill Carr, Steve Kessel, Laura Orvidas, Steve Frazier, Jon Witham, Jeff Wilke, Ian Simpson, Christine Beauchamp and Doug Herrington.
We encourage our leaders at Amazon to move around the company, to learn and grow in different roles. I’ve been a beneficiary of this culture of mobility. Over twenty years I’ve felt like I’ve traversed many companies, in part due to rapid growth and change, but in larger part due to the variety of roles I’ve held. There is no better way to learn than by doing. Embracing these different opportunities for personal growth has been invigorating.
Lastly, I’m so lucky to greet each morning with a “what can we invent today?” mindset. As someone with high curiosity and zeal for experimenting, I get fired up by our practice of obsessing over how to surprise and delight our customers. We love to innovate. Sometimes those innovations don’t always work, but we quadruple down on those that do.
Twenty years ago, I started Amazon as the first employee in our nascent Digital Music division. As a product manager there I helped define and build our Amazon MP3 music download service (especially great for customers with iPods – remember iPods?). It was a bold experiment, but customers loved it. Here [
https://lnkd.in/gaetfyFh] is a 2007 review from Daring Fireball’s John Gruber on it (still one of the best tech writers out there, btw), with my favorite line, “There’s a very high ‘it just works’ factor here.” That launch jumpstarted our digital music business, which – like all of our digital media businesses – rapidly evolved and grew. There are more stories to share from those years (another time), but I’ve been motivated to make it ‘just work’ for customers ever since. What can we invent to make their experience even better, every day? Here’s to continuing this journey, fueled by learning, growing and experimenting – and taking moments of true gratitude along the way.
