Milestone Recap

March 2022: I took my first IELTS exam. After intense preparation, getting a low score was more than demotivation. I was too young to accept reality; everything seemed impossible. Decided to move on.

May 2022: DV lottery(Green Card). A key to a door of crazy opportunities was given to me. This motivated me so much.

June 2022: Rejected from every lyceum I applied to. Thinking about those days, I am so happy that I couldn't study at ALWIUT or IHT, as I studied in a better school where I found a lifelong friendship and support.

September 2022: New school, new life. I started to study at Cambridge International College, even though I was not really satisfied with that choice, the unique atmosphere and incredible people made me fall in love with that school. I found friends who made me stronger in terms of imaan.

December 2022: I took my first SAT. After a negative experience, I decided that the SAT was not for me.

May 2023: Graduated from CIC, it was really hard to leave that perfect atmosphere and say goodbye to people there.

August 2023: Turning point. After moving to the United States, I decided to take a gap year to work on my application and take AP exams. I was the only Uzbek at my school, and that was a huge factor in my social isolation. I became an introvert. Balancing academic and work life became easier, and I saw a considerable improvement in my academic performance. However, isolation affected the quality of my life.

September 2023: My family decided to move to Ohio. I found Uzbek friends, and I was able to return to extrovert mode. Granted, I couldn't take advanced courses because there were special requirements for graduation in Ohio.

October 2023: Why not? After long consideration, the idea of applying this year came to mind. Taking Freshman's admissions program and having 1:1 meetings with Dr. Lyusyena and Valera played a very important role in this application season. Working in a part-time job, studying and applying to colleges was a burden. I was morally tired.

December 2023: Rejected from my ED1 school. There was nothing that I could do, so I moved on. The wisdom of "Taqdiri Qazo" helped a lot to accept fate and keep pushing.

January 2024–February 2024: Sleepless nights. I identified a lot of mistakes I made while applying to my ED1 school and decided to work on them. I was crafting my application until the deadline.

February 2024: Deferred from my ED2 school. Said Alhamdulillah, as I had a lot of schools left for RD.

March 2024: I got into several top schools with full-ride scholarships. The most remarkable was Skidmore College, which offered me $357.000. It was a very selective school, and full rides were given to a selected number of students. My hard work showed its results.

April 2024: Decided to study at one of the most prestigious schools in the nation(Rutgers New Brunswick). I did not get a full-ride scholarship, as I was an Out-of-State student. However, I was selected to attend Honors College, which had an acceptance rate of 3%, and I got a good amount of scholarship, which will cover more than 70% of my COA.

Some insights for 2024-2025 application season

1) Always apply to Ivies

You don't know what will happen at the end of the day, so it is better to try your luck. Do not procrastinate and write your supplemental essays.

2) Start crafting your Common App essay as soon as possible

Brainstorm ideas, write what comes to your mind, and craft different versions of your Personal Statement.

3) Create your College List in summer (June-July)

Research universities for your needs. Useful websites: https://collegescorecard.ed.gov/
https://www.usnews.com/best-colleges
https://www.topuniversities.com/university-rankings

4) Use two websites to apply

Apply through Common app and Scoir. If a college is listed on both platforms, use Scoir. In the opposite scenario use Common App (as it allows to apply to 20 colleges max).

5) Always check application portals

Some colleges email you about missing documents, but there are some institutions which do not notify you about them. So, it is a good idea to check application portals every 2-3 days to ensure that your application is complete.

6) Apply for Financial Aid on time

If you miss the deadline for CSS profile submission, the institution might not accept it and you will not receive any aid.
