IT ALL STARTED WITH THE ‘SELECT’ 🎮
To this day, I am still convinced the most important thing in learning a language is enthusiasm. There has to be one source of interest that provides intrinsic motivation for you to keep exploring the language.
In my case, the first few English words I can remember were select and start, for obvious reasons (take a look at the attached image). And the games we played (including PES and FIFA) on our PlayStation were in English, with no translations at all. Before attending my first IELTS course, I already knew all key football terms in English. Whenever I’d see a sports word in IELTS reading or listening, I would get excited as every piece of familiar vocabulary would be a flashback to happy moments of exploration in childhood.
There are many stories like mine where language immersion helps an individual learn in the most efficient way possible, but in my case, the process that started in early 2000s still didn’t finish. I mean, I’m still learning new words, obviously at a more advanced level, but the interest is still there. And this paragraph uses the word still many times because that’s how you see my emphasis on consistency.
Anyways, interest is key. If you are a student reading this and you feel stuck at a particular level with no energy left in learning English, maybe you need to connect it with what makes you excited. It doesn’t have to be football, but you understood the main point.
