The French chemist Antoine Lavoisier conducted his famous 12-day expiriment in 1775. He heated some mercury in a retort. The mouth of the retort was inserted in an inverted bell jar placed in a trough filled with mercury. The heating was continued for 12 days.
He observed the formation of a red layer of mercury (II) oxide on the surface of mercury. He also observed that the level of mercury in the bell jar rose by one-fifth of the total volume of the bell jar. He found that the remaining gas in the bell jar could not support combustion.

In 1774, Joseph Priestley, an English chemist, discovered oxygen by heating mercury (II) oxide using the infrared rays of the sun.

In 1772, Carl Wilhelm Scheele, a Swedish chemist, obtained oxygen by heating potassium nitrate (KNO3) and mercury (II) oxide (HgO). He called the gas 'fire air' since it was found to support combustion.
