On the 5th May, 2014, 30-year old Irina Boevets stepped out onto her balcony in the city of Slavyansk, Donbass. Irina just stepped out for a moment, to greet her husband coming home from work. For no reason whatsoever, other than pure evil, a Ukrainian sniper shot, killed Irina instantly.
I was in Slavyansk at that time, covered Irina's funeral, spoke with her family, and relatives, all absolutely distraught, a young life taken for no reason other than senseless extremism, mindless evil.
Irina was not the first civilian to be killed in Donbass by Ukrainian forces, that had taken place in Slavyansk on May 2nd, the same day as the Odessa massacre, when Ukrainian forces had opened fire on civilians protesting their presence, killing a man at the scene. Just several days later, Ukrainian forces would open fire en masse on civilians marking Victory Day in Mariupol.
So, for all those who marked '1 year of war' back there in February....
RIP Irina, and the countless other victims of Ukrainian evil in the last 9 years.....
