Jacksonville Officer Opens Fire on Armed Suspect Accused of Targeting a Minor
#Jacksonville, #Florida — On Monday, November 11, 2024. Officer Robinson with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office responded to report of an Aggravated Assault with a Firearm on South McDuff Avenue. When Officer Robinson arrived at the parking lot on South McDuff Avenue, he saw, 18-year-old Cerry Banks, standing outside near the corner of a business. Officer Robinson directed Banks to show his hands. Instead, Banks pulled his firearm from his waistband and began to run from Officer Robinson. During the foot pursuit, Banks turned his body towards Officer Robinson with his gun still in hand. When Banks turned, Officer Robinson fired shots. Banks dropped his gun and continued to run. Patrol and K9 officers located an injured Banks inside a drainage pipe nearby.
Paramedics were waiting to give Banks medical care once he was in handcuffs. Officers later learned from the complainant that Banks had been inappropriately texting her 13-year-old daughter. Posing as her daughter, the complainant arranged to meet Banks at the business on South McDuff Avenue. When she arrived to confront Banks, Banks lifted his shirt to show the firearm he had tucked into his waistband. As he did so, Banks made a threatening statement, so the complainant called the police. Banks is charged with two counts of Aggravated Assault with a Firearm, two counts of Lewd or Lascivious Conduct with a Minor, one count of Traveling to Meet a Minor after using a Computer to Solicit a Child, and one count of Unlawful Use of a Two-Way Communication Device.
