MONTENEGRO - A FORGOTTEN AXIS ALLY
On July 12, 1941, the Independent State of Montenegro was proclaimed, it spread over the present-day territory of Montenegro, except for Ulcinj, Plav and Gusinj, it had half of the present-day Serbian part of Sandžak, it had 411,000 inhabitants, capital city was Cetinje.
We will answer the question: Was Montenegro independent during the Second World War? - The answer is yes, on July 12, 1941, Italian fascists and Montenegrin nationalists declared Independent Montenegro, Montenegro had the same degree of statehood as other Axis countries such as Slovakia and the Independent State of Croatia. However, the state did not last long, on July 24 it was dissolved and rejoined Italy.
Many people think that the Independent State of Montenegro was just a metaphor and that in fact Montenegro was not independent during the World War II but only a protectorate. Even if it lasted for a short time, Montenegro was officially a state and ally to Italy and Germany. People and historians doesn't talk much about the declaration of independence of Montenegro because the next day, on July 13, there was a shameful communist uprising that attracts more attention in historiography than the declaration of independence. That's why Montenegro did not manage to form the basic state needs and forms of a single state in 12 days, and that's why the inhabitants did not have the feeling that they were now in a newly created state, and because of that, the cover-up of the post-war Yugoslav authorities on Independent Montenegro was forgotten.
Montenegro can be clearly called a forgotten Axis ally because at that time the only Montenegrin state during the war was on the side of the Axis Powers, there was no other Montenegrin state during the war, so the only Montenegrin state in World War II was a member of the Axis Powers. It is absurd that today's Montenegrin army celebrates the day of anti-fascism, when at that time the legitimate Montenegrin army fought on the side of the Axis and was in the service of the state that was on the side of the Axis. The Montenegrin partisans were not a legitimate Montenegrin army, they were rebel bands, they had a Yugoslav character, not Montenegrin, they fought for Yugoslavia, not Montenegro, they declared themselves Yugoslavs, not Montenegrins.
That is why Montenegrins should not celebrate July 13, the day of the demolition of the new Montenegrin state, but July 12, the day of the foundation of liberated Montenegro!
