The cockpit door stays locked during flight to prevent hijackings, so he consciously unlocked it after being stabbed while fighting.
This allowed the cabin crew and passengers to intervene. If he hadnโt, NOBODY could have entered the cockpit. The plane was already descending โฆ it would have been over.
