Can I wear a cheongsam to a wedding?

Iā€™m a white woman and in expanding my education in how to be anti-racist, Iā€™m asking the reddit community their thoughts on this topic. I was gifted a beautiful cheongsam as a farewell gift from my former Chinese coworkers. I will be attending a wedding in October and to me it seems like the perfect opportunity to wear it. However, I donā€™t want to come across as appropriating Chinese culture and I certainly donā€™t want to offend anyone. Iā€™ve read various articles online and I seem to get mixed signals of whether or not this is appropriate. But most of them say if you wear the gown with good intentions and in the appropriate setting, it is not offensive. Because the majority of the wedding attendees will be white, I want to be sure Iā€™m fully educated and can pass on that knowledge to any other white people who may be misinformed.

And as a side note to this question, the gown is slightly too big on me. I was planning on tying a sash around my waist to avoid paying for alterations. Would this be appropriate?

Thank you!
