Female boss told me I should wear makeup to work

I work in Insurance at a desk job with no customer facing role. My boss said she thought it was weird I don’t wear makeup. I was 24 at the time and didn’t feel I needed or wanted to wear any. I wear pant suits and flat dress shoes and keep my hair in a bun so I know I look professional and am complying with the dress code. I just don’t look like her. She wears very feminine dresses and wears very long hair down and lots of make up and jewellery. Am I nuts that this is totally offensive? My colleagues says she has mentioned this behind my back too like it’s a problem…

Edit: thanks for all the positive responses and so much to take it. Didn’t think it needed addressing but my boss and I are both Caucasian and from the NorthEast of US. I’m from NY, she’s from
Rural Massachusetts

This sub has me thinking of moving out of the US.

Anyone know what the work life is like in Canada? Is it better than the US?

Edit: Looks like I was overly naive and Canada's housing situation is as bad and the job market isn't better either.

Also, TIL that the US will tax my ass wherever I go. And only one other country on Earth does that: Eritrea 🇪🇷.

We're witnessing one of the biggest labor movements in recent history but the media isn't covering it. The time to act is now!

Today is salary day, boss surprises us with a 40% cut, I refused the pay

Little background, we work for a hotel and we recently closed for this year, and a handful of essential workers were left, while 90% were sent home. We had a great summer season this year, and bussines was very good. Now although hotel is closed we have a lots of work, cleaning, maintenance, and sale for next year( my job).
So payday comes today and our boss hands us our pay, 40% deducted, saying it will stay that way until next year. So essentially I refused the pay and told them that they can't inform me of a pay cut on the day of the pay, especially such significant one, and refused to sign the pay sheet. All the other workers just grudged a little and essentially accepted the cut.
I know a lot of the tourism sector has been hit, but not this place, we absolutely killed this year.
I told our boss that he can either giveme full pay tomorrow or I quit.

That's about it, I don't really need any advice, because I already decided quitting, just wanted to share my frustration of my colleagues lack of action on such injustice.

Stiffed out of $6700

This Halloween season I've been working for a pretty big Halloween store in the US that has been killing it all season. We've been working so hard all season because they promised us a pretty nice bonus this year. $100 for every 1% that we're over our sales goal. Well we went over by 67% and then last minute they said "Oh hey that bonus doesn't actually apply to any of you." I am so pissed off along with everyone else that has been pushing sales. I'm definitely never going there again as an employee or a customer.

Quit my job because my boss told me that work should be my #1 priority. Here’s to pursuing woodworking full time. Thanks for giving me the push to standup for myself after seeing so many of you do the same.

Anyone just not have the fight in them and is thinking about just moving to Europe?

The current work culture is too entrenched and the covid situation hasn’t changed things much in a meaningful way at the national level.

I’m not optimistic that it can change. There are just too many of the old breed in power, brining up their successors in the same old mindset.

I’m just tired. So tired.

To all the “stay and fight” people. What fight? There isn’t one. That’s the point. And even if there was, the odds of winning are so small a tactical retreat makes a LOT more sense.

First job in Germany after working in the US all my life

I am American and recently started my first job at a German company here in Germany. I really can’t believe what I thought was acceptable
back in the US. The scary thing is I worked for a company that was typically regarded as a very good employer in terms of benefits and culture.

I swear my new coworkers (not only Germans but an international group) almost fainted when I told them that at my last company when we were sick we had to use our paid time off. They couldn’t comprehend how anyone would ever be able to have any time left to go on holiday. It’s really shit what we have been accepting in the US.

I'm fed up of being told to live with less by a generation who've hoarded more than they need or could possibly spend.

I don't want a lot. I just want what was promised if I played by their rules. I do my 45 hours of work a week, and I want to be able to have a life worth living for the hours I'm not working. That includes buying a fucking coffee or having a meal out with my family once in a while without feeling guilty about the money I'm spending.

I've worked full time in good paying employment for 20 years now and I'm still nowhere near where my parent's generation was in terms of financial stability and quality of life. We've been screwed and I've really had enough. If 20 years of work has got me to £35,000 in assets, what's the next 40 years going to get me? Not enough to retire. Not enough to own a house. Not enough to enjoy life.
