Futaba Yoshioka had a crush on a boy when she was in middle school.  Said boy, Kou Tanaka, had a crush on her too but for various circumstances they became each other’s missed connection.  Fast forward to high school and they meet again, but they are very different people.  Futaba is trying hard to gain female friends by making herself unappealing to the boys.  Kou is dealing with deep personal issues and has become generally cantankerous.  They become friends pretty quickly but it’s readily apparent to both of them they have unresolved feelings for one another, but at the same time can’t seem to bridge the gap their changes have wrought.  Friends they make in their class watch this scenario play out over time with various feelings of pity and exasperation.
