🔥United States’ first known case of more severe strain of mpox confirmed in California | CNN
The first known case of a more severe strain of mpox in the US was confirmed in California by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The infected person had traveled from Eastern Africa where an outbreak is ongoing, but the risk to the public is considered low. The subtype responsible for the recent spread is clade Ib, which has been reported in several countries outside of Africa. The CDC states that clade I mpox historically caused more severe illness and deaths than clade II mpox, but recent data show milder disease courses. The World Health Organization notes a rise in mpox cases in Africa, mainly in specific countries. Mpox, related to smallpox, spreads through close contact and contaminated materials. Initial symptoms are flu-like, followed by a rash that scabs over. Prevention includes avoiding contact with infected individuals and getting vaccinated. The WHO is convening to discuss if the current outbreak constitutes a public health emergency of international concern.
