transmediale 2023
a model, a map, a fiction

A four-day festival and a
citywide exhibition
1–5 February
Akademie de
r Künste, Berlin
and across the city

The 2023 festival edition – a model, a map, a fiction – will transform the Akademie der Künste into a space of discussion and workshops, with exhibitions, performances, and film. The festival will explore how technological scale creates relations and fractures in the world by transferring images through history and across socio-political contexts.

In addition, an expanded programme will take place throughout the city: Out of Scale is a free citywide exhibition within Berlin's networks and infrastructures that generates critical conversations around how technology and its precise measurement systems can be reassembled.

Fantasia Malware Presents...at transmediale studio again

Building on the live-gaming performance night last month, the third event in the series will feature performances by Chloê Langford (Fantasia Malware) and M.

CHAOS CAVE (Langford) is a fizzy video game poetry reading that swings and swims in a squiggly orbit around a wet and weird clock. M performs hard, dark, and nasty songs with video game instruments and transforms from disgusting goo into UNTOUCHABLE LAVA. After the performances, Adrienne Kammerer will do a laptop DJ set.

From the Almanac

The film Valentina is a speculative portrait of and film fan-letter to composer and musician Wendy Carlos – self-described as "The Original Synth".

Online only until 14 February!

In the recorded studio session rehearsal letter for transmediale x CTM 2021, Frances Scott and Tom Richards bring their respective film and sound practices together. The studio session reinterprets pages from Carlos' original scores for "Timesteps" and "Theme from A Clockwork Orange (Beethovania)" (1971) using the Mini Oramics machine built by Tom Richards based on the original designs by Daphne Oram.

From the Almanac

This year the Marshall McLuhan Lecture is given by our Canadian speaker Jason Edward Lewis. His talk Expansive, Embracing, Evolving: Looking Beyond Impoverished Intelligences draws from the work of the Indigenous Protocol and Artificial Intelligence Working Group. He explores and questions how indigenous perspectives can be brought into computational thinking. Lewis questions our ethical relationship to AI and proposes a relational rather than instrumental perspective on creating our artificial intelligent kin.

🌑🌒🌓🌔🌕

We are excited to begin our year-long festival programme with the launch of transmediale’s 2021–22 digital platform, Almanac for Refusal, on 28 January, the first full moon of the year. The Almanac will be updated monthly over 2021, following the lunar cycle, and feature a collection of browser-based artworks; films, photo-essays, texts, graphs, images, podcasts, sound experiments, and more.

Offering partial renders of socio-political realities that misalign with the status quo, our exhibition Rendering Refusal explores what can emerge when hope and refusal come together. Taking place across two venues in Berlin – Kunstraum Kreuzberg/Bethanien and Betonhalle, Silent Green Kulturquartier – the exhibition runs until 28 March. We will be facilitating access to the exhibition through Remote Visits – visitors can connect via video call with a guide at the venue and experience the exhibition with them.

Together with numerous project spaces, galleries and cultural institutions, we celebrate the 10th anniversary of Vorspiel / transmediale & CTM with a mix of in-person and online formats involving digital art and culture as well as experimental music and sound art.
The pre-festival programme opens up with critical discourse on art, technology, politics and identity and offers possibilities for ongoing exchange and reflection.
The programme begins 15 January 2021 and will be updated continously on the website.
