Al Qaeda is one of the most notorious terrorist organizations in the world, responsible for some of the deadliest attacks in history. The group was founded by Osama bin Laden in the late 1980s, during the Afghan-Soviet War. At the time, bin Laden was a wealthy Saudi businessman who had been radicalized by the Islamic extremist ideology of the Muslim Brotherhood. He traveled to Afghanistan to join the mujahideen, the Afghan resistance fighters who were battling against the Soviet army. Bin Laden used his wealth and connections to help fund and support the mujahideen, and he quickly became a prominent figure in the movement. After the Soviet army withdrew from Afghanistan in 1989, bin Laden returned to Saudi Arabia and began to focus his attention on other issues. He became increasingly critical of the Saudi government, which he believed was corrupt and insufficiently Islamic. Bin Laden also became concerned about the presence of US military forces in Saudi Arabia, which he saw as a violation of Islamic sovereignty (from Origins, objectives, and development of Al Qaeda)
al-Qaeda, referred to as ‘the Base’ was founded in 1989 by Osama bin Laden and other like-thinking militant Muslims as the ultimate outcome of the 1979 invasion of Afghanistan by the USSR. Initially, al-Qaeda was created to record and track down the names of the mujahideen listed as missing during the guerrilla war against the USSR.
Bin Laden was born in 1957 as the seventeenth of fifty one children to a billionaire Saudi Arabian extended family and as an heir to its fortune accumulated in the construction industry from contracts negotiated with the Saudi Royal Family.
At the time of the Soviet invasion, Afghanistan lacked the necessary infrastructure, manpower and financial resources to fight an effective guerrilla war against a major super-power. Recognizing this, Abdallah Azzam inducted bin Laden into providing financial and personal support for Mujahideen.
No matter what, one thing is sure: every country in the world is mafious in some way!
