Judge blocks new government rule that would expand transgender rights — CBS
Starting in July, Joe Biden's administration will expand Title IX, the federal law that prohibits discrimination based on sex. Except District Judge Terry Doughty has a different opinion on that.
Under the new rule, schools must provide students with gender-appropriate restrooms, teachers must address students with pronouns consistent with their gender identity, and transgender (biological male) students themselves will be allowed to compete in women's competitions.
Justice Doughty said the rule exceeded the Department of Education's authority. He called the government's action an abuse of power, a threat to democracy, and an interference with state sovereignty.
The rule is blocked for now in Louisiana, Mississippi, Montana and Idaho, which initially fought against the innovation.
