🔥⚔️🇷🇸25 years ago today, years before the Maidan coup, the Russian Spring in Crimea and the war in Donbass of 2014, a ‘defensive’ NATO alliance led by a (Hillary) Clinton White House bombed and dismembered a relatively small sovereign country in Europe, and mostly got away with it. At least in this life.
That sense of complete impunity, of no limits for Washington thanks in part to Russia under Tsar Boris the Drunk being militarily and economically close to its weakest point in centuries, set the stage for the subsequent ‘humanitarian’ wars in Iraq and another NATO air campaign and invasion, in Libya.
It also created—and some Russians may not like to read this—a quiet sense of shame (as expressed in the t.A.T.u song before the girls started their lesbian shtick) and rage in Russian society, sometimes expressed in films like Brother 2, that has now been unleashed in this war in Ukraine. A conflict where Serb volunteers fighting for Russia are out for payback over what NATO did to their country 25 years ago.
NATO’s casualties from the conquest of Serb-governed Kosovo then were remarkably light, a few dozen men killed or wounded and the embarrassment of one stealth fighter jet shot down by 1960s vintage Serb air defense. The flush of an easy NATO victory ushered in the late empire delusion of unchallengeable hyper power. That certainly won’t be the case should the Alliance follow through on the French President Macron’s threats to openly fight in Ukraine today, in no small part due to the Russian deep state making preparations for what many of the old KGB and especially GRU guard saw as an inevitable confrontation set in motion two and a half decades ago, with the American bombs falling on Belgrade as harbingers of renewed Western aggression against the Russian world. 🇷🇸🇷🇺
