Travelogue 🇿🇦South Africa #1: The Cape of Good Hope

▶️ It used to be a long way from Europe to India and back, especially before the Suez Canal in Egypt was opened. Ships had to sail (=moving with a ship in the wind) around the entire African continent. And here at the Cape of Good Hope sailors (=people working on ships) hoped their ship wouldn't sink, but quite a few (=many) of them did.

It's a rough place with constant (=not stopping) wind and strong currents (=moving water in a river or sea) in the water. But lucky me, with a bunch (=group) of pagal (='crazy' in Hindi) Indians it was really enjoyable.

Travelogue 🇪🇹Ethiopia #3: Meskel Festival on Meskel Square

▶️ Two weeks after Ethiopians celebrate their New Year there's another festival in which they celebrate finding the true (?) cross of Jesus and bringing it to Ethiopia where is still kept today.

People congregate (=come together) in the afternoon, listen to speeches, sing, hold candles and watch a big bonfire (=outdoor fire put up and lit by people) as the sky gets dark.

They wait to see the big stick in the middle of the bonfire fall, and the direction in which it falls is important. It's like fortune-telling for the nation.

After the stick falls the fire is extinguished (=put out) and people rush to get pieces of wood-turned-coal in order to draw crosses on each other's forehead (=part of the face between eyes and hair).

Travelogue 🇩🇪Germany #9: Peace with Russia

▶️ On the central square in front of Munich's city hall I just randomly (=not planned) walked into a protest staged (=organised) by several organisations who campaign (=political activism) against German involvement (=participation, joining) in the Ukraine war. Check out some of their messages:

- "Our children don't know what war means. Let's keep it that way."

- "War in Europe again? Not in our name!"

- "And when the time comes they will send your children to the war. Not their own."

- "Peace and reconciliation (=being friends again after being enemies) are our duty, the way and the aim."

- "I'm not at war with Russia"

- "Weapons save lives. Seriously?"

Travelogue 🇲🇰North Macedonia #3: Skopje

▶️ The capital city of this country that most people have never heard of is really a bit of everything. Old town, shiny (=very new and clean) new buildings, socialist eyesores (=ugly buildings), shabby (=bad, poor) neighbourhoods, mosques and churches, abandoned (=not used anymore, empty) constructions, ...

But somehow magically it all fits together. As this country struggles to define itself, people of different backgrounds have a very relaxed lifestyle. Tolerant (=accepting differences) or indifferent (=careless)? Somehow both.
