Ethiopia #3:
Meskel Festival on Meskel Square
▶️ Two weeks after Ethiopians celebrate their New Year there's another festival in which they celebrate finding the true (?) cross of Jesus and bringing it to Ethiopia where is still kept today.
People
congregate (=come together) in the afternoon, listen to speeches, sing, hold candles and watch a big
bonfire (=outdoor fire put up and lit by people) as the sky gets dark.
They wait to see the big stick in the middle of the bonfire fall, and the direction in which it falls is important. It's like fortune-telling for the nation.
After the stick falls the fire is
extinguished (=put out) and people rush to get pieces of wood-turned-coal in order to draw crosses on each other's
forehead (=part of the face between eyes and hair).
