Around the world, and particularly in the Arab and Iranian region (West Asia), the leading anti-imperialist forces coming into direct confrontation with the United States and the Zionist project are Islamic Resistance forces, including in Palestine, Lebanon, Yemen and Iran. The United States targets these organizations, and states, with criminalization, sanctions and direct military assault. At the same time, imperialist politicians, governments and think tanks regularly raise an alarm about the threat to U.S. hegemony posed by a potential “red-green alliance,” a unified revolutionary/anti-imperialist front involving Islamic resistance and revolutionary left movements at an international level. How should Marxists and left revolutionaries understand the Islamic resistance movements? What is the potential for building a united front?

We will discuss these questions on Sunday, July 19, with Charlotte Kates, co-founder of the Samidoun Palestinian Prisoner Solidarity Network, deputy secretary-general of the International Association of Democratic Lawyers, and longtime activist for justice and liberation in Palestine. Based in Lebanon, Charlotte recently returned from Iran, where she attended the millions-strong funeral commemorations for Imam Sayyed Ali Khamenei.

On Sunday, July 12, the Institute for the Critical Study of Society hosted Immanuel Ness for the Sunday Morning Marxist Forum, speaking about his new book, "The Dialectics of Chinese Labor." Watch here or on YouTube:

https://youtu.be/IPH4ayqiyk4

The Dialectics of Chinese Labor examines China’s trade union adaptation to the changing demands of the working class. For nearly 50 years, market socialism has transformed China from a rural to an urban economy, posing significant challenges to China’s trade union federation (ACFTU). The labor federation has skillfully reshaped its organizing strategies to respond to workers’ new material realities. Our speaker counters the monolithic position that devalues ACFTU by using direct evidence to reveal its commitment and determination to improve wages and working conditions across the industrial, service, digital, and rural sectors of the Chinese economy.

Our speaker, Immanuel Ness, is the author many books, the most recent of which is Dialectics of Chinese Labor. A year ago, Prof. Ness spoke at the Marxist Forum on his acclaimed Migration as Economic Imperialism: How International Labor Mobility Undermines Economic Development in Poor Countries (Polity 2023), which focuses on Western financial imperialism and the oppression of the Global South.

Immanuel Ness is a professor of political science at Brooklyn College (CUNY) and a visiting professor of sociology at the University of Johannesburg, South Africa. A trade union organizer in the US and labor activist in the Global South, Immanuel Ness is editor-in-chief of the Journal of Labor and Society. He is chair of the New York Peace Council and of the International Committee of the PSC/CUNY, a labor union representing faculty at CUNY.

His many books, academic articles, chapters, and edited volumes handbooks focus on US imperialism and labor movements. His other books include Sanctions as War (Brill 2022) , Southern Insurgency: The Coming of the Global Working Class (Pluto 2016), and the Palgrave Encyclopedia of Imperialism and Anti-Imperialism (2014/2021).

Has Lenin’s Imperialism Withstood the Test of Time?

Few political works have shaped anti-colonial and revolutionary movements more profoundly than Vladimir Lenin’s Imperialism, the Highest Stage of Capitalism (1916). Written amid the collapse of the Second International and the support of many socialist parties for World War I, it condemned both monopoly capital and the social-democratic movements that accommodated it.

More than a century later, the world has changed dramatically. Yet the work’s concepts of monopoly capital, colonial exploitation, labor aristocracies, and the parasitic tendencies of advanced capitalism remain a cornerstone of Marxist critique of empire and liberation.

Did Lenin’s work anticipate the changing forms of imperialism across the eras of decolonization, American hegemony, the Cold War, the collapse of the Soviet Union, and the emergence of a multipolar order? Can his theory still explain today’s dynamics of global capitalism and imperial rivalry?

This presentation examines both the enduring insights and some shortcomings of Lenin’s theory, assessing how best to apply those concepts to understanding capitalism today.

Peter Fay is a public historian writing on slavery and early labor movements from a Marxist perspective. He also teaches Marx’s Capital using insights from his earlier experience as a United Steelworkers local officer, and an organizer with UE and District 1199.

Is the decline of the US empire anything more than a leftist prayer? Believers in US empire decline note three economic factors: the US economic position in the world has seriously weakened, particularly in relation to China; countries are turning away from the dollar as the currency for international trade, which would cripple the US; the US national debt is a weight that will crush the economy.

To have a provocative discussion on this topic, we have invited long-time activist and past speaker Stansfield Smith to return. He was a leader of the Chicago Committee to Free the Cuban 5 and has been active in defense of Venezuela, Cuba, and Nicaragua for years. He has put out the Venezuela and ALBA Weekly News since 2013 and the online newsletter for the Nicaragua Solidarity Coalition for the past three years.

His website is ChicagoALBASolidarity.org. He has published in LA Progressive, Dissident Voice, Council on Hemispheric Affairs, Covert Action, Monthly Review online, and other websites. Relevant articles by our speaker include: Inadequacy of Modern Monetary Theory and the Power of the US Dollar in the World Economy and Why the US Can Keep Increasing its Debt and not Suffer Inflation.

Should China be characterized as capitalist/state-capitalist or market socialist (socialism with Chinese characteristics) or semi-peripheral or imperialist or semi-colonial or oppressed or oppressor? Should the emergence of China as a competitor of the US in many areas be seen as a great anti-imperialist development? Or, can it be argued that Chinese capitalist development will lead to inter-imperialist conflicts and wars throughout the world? How much power do the Chinese working class assert in China? Should the present Chinese model be followed by other countries? The speaker will also touch upon the state of productive forces, science and technology in China, and will also assess the Chinese military capabilities. During the whole talk, the speaker will aim to compare Chinese, Indian and the US development with the help of figures, tables and other visuals.

Dr. Amit Singh finished his Masters and PhD in Mechanics from University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, where he had been involved with anti-war and labor organizing efforts at Minneapolis. Currently, he is a faculty at IIT Bombay, India, where he is involved in the struggles around working class-caste issues including resistance against attack on freedom of expression, on academic freedom and attack on national minorities.

On February 28th the United States and Israel launched an illegal war of aggression against Iran, and Iran is on the defensive against the most powerful military in the world.

The United States and Israel’s illegal war of aggression is exactly what Hitler did when Nazi Germany invaded Poland on September 1, 1939 provoking the European Theater of World War II.

The United States orchestrated Nuremberg Trials declared that unprovoked wars of aggression were a “crime against international law” and a “crime against humanity.”

German military officers were executed because of those crimes.

Therefore, President Trump and Prime Minister Netanyahu should face a international independent criminal tribunal because of their illegal war of aggression against Iran.
