In 1945 the post-war purge courts sentenced him to death for his role in the Franco-German occupation regime. The sentence was later commuted to life imprisonment.

🕊 Political cartoonist and satirist Nick Bougas has died at the age of 71.

He was best known for his "racist, antisemitic, antifeminist, and homophobic cartoons."

One image in particular, an cartoon of a Jewish man known as the “Happy Merchant,” became one of the most recognizable and widely circulated memes on the internet.

More broadly, Bougas’s cartoons circulated extensively across online subcultures throughout the 1990s, 2000s, and 2010s, first in the American online sphere and later across European and global internet communities. They became recurring material in trolling culture, imageboards such as 4chan, and far-right networks around the world.

🇩🇪🇫🇷 1935 - In Nuremberg, the Austrian painter receives “Joyeuse,” Charlemagne’s sword and the coronation sword of the kings of France, as part of a ceremony proclaiming him the new Emperor of Europe.

Just days after receiving the sword of the French kings, he praises Charlemagne as the founder of two of Europe’s great Germanic states: Germany and France. More broadly, he presents Charlemagne and his descendants in a highly positive light, crediting them with overcoming tribal divisions and making a higher form of political unity possible.

In 1942, he describes Charlemagne as “one of the greatest men in world history.”
