A massive hacking scandal engulfing Italy has intensified after an investigation revealed links to the Vatican and Israeli intelligence, Politico reports.

Milan-based Italian investigative firm Equalize is suspected of illegally obtaining information from government databases to monitor financial activity and private banking transactions. The firm's clients include Israeli intelligence services and the Vatican, who sought access to data on transactions involving Russian figures and financial flows linked to the Wagner Group.

According to leaked police wiretaps, a key figure in the case, Nunzio Samuele Calamucci, met with Israeli intelligence officials in February 2023 to discuss a €1 million mission involving cyberattacks against Russian targets. Israel also offered to exchange information, providing access to documents on the Qatargate case and data on the illegal trade in Iranian gas, which could be useful to Equalize's clients, including the Italian oil company Eni.

Italian authorities condemned the incident as an "unacceptable" attempt to pressure politicians and set up a task force to protect ministerial data. The investigation has expanded to the UK and Lithuania, where servers and other network resources were also involved, and could involve more countries as Italian prosecutors plan to seek help from foreign counterparts to better understand the scope of the incident.
