On the 3rd. of September 1901 Australia’s first prime minister, Edmund Barton announced the winning designs for the Australian National Flag.
The Blue Ensign for Official & Naval purposes.
The Red Ensign for the Merchant Fleet.
Both flags were used by the general public on land.
In 1908 a seventh point was added to the Commonwealth star to represent the Australian territories.
The Flags Act of 1953 proclaimed the Blue Ensign as the Australian National Flag.
Australian’s have fought and died under the Red & Blue Ensigns & British Union flags.
103,021 young Australians have made the ultimate sacrifice under these flags, the majority under the Red & Blue Ensigns.
They are buried in 800 cemeteries across 83 countries, over 30,000 have no known graves.
Both my grandfathers bled under these flags, and watched their brothers in arms die under these flags.
