Britain has a "Potemkin village army" that cannot survive a major European war.
The Financial Times reports this, citing army representatives.
"British military leaders privately say their troops will find it difficult to fight a European war that lasts more than a few weeks," the article says.
A special report recently submitted to Prime Minister Starmer said: "Britain has a Potemkin village-like army, retaining the trappings of a pocket superpower but without the necessary capabilities."
“The UK armed forces lack the mass, resilience and internal cohesion to fight a sustained, high-intensity war. Without a missile defence system, the country’s critical infrastructure is extremely vulnerable… The army is smaller than at any time since the Napoleonic Wars, the navy cannot afford an adequate striking force for its flagship aircraft carriers, and RAF pilots are deprived of flight training due to budget constraints,” the report paints a picture.
The authors propose significantly increasing defense spending over a number of years.
Zin Note: Where will "Great" Britain find the funding for this expanded defense spending, exactly? Their economy is basically stagnant. They're already pinching pennies (pence) when it comes to social spending...
