Foreign Minister Ambassador Ahmed Moalim Fiqi Launches the United Nations Transitional Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNTMIS)

Foreign Minister Ambassador Ahmed Moallim Fiqi launched the United Nations Transitional Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNTMIS) in Mogadishu, marking a pivotal step as Somalia transitions from the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) to UNTMIS, progressing toward a UN Country Team by 2026. This transition reflects the resilience and achievements of the Somali people, from debt relief advancements to the lifting of the arms embargo, joining the East African Community, and our forthcoming tenure on the UN Security Council.
Ambassador Fiqi highlighted Somalia’s progress and its growing presence on the global stage, recognizing the efforts of UNSOM, the Federal Government’s Joint Technical Teams, and the invaluable support of donor nations. Key dignitaries, including Minister of Interior Ali Yusuf Hosh, Minister of Information Daud Aweys, and Acting Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General James Swan, joined to commemorate this significant step. Ambassador Fiqi emphasized Somalia’s journey toward a peaceful, self-reliant future and called for continued collaboration with partners in strengthening Somali institutions.
Acting Special Representative James Swan reiterated the importance of a clear roadmap, while Omar Mohamed, UNSOM’s longest-serving Somali staff member, reflected on the values and shared commitment uniting Somalia and the UN.
The event concluded with a ceremonial cake-cutting, symbolizing our shared vision for stability and prosperity in Somalia. Together with our partners, we are committed to building a peaceful, sovereign Somalia where every Somali can contribute to and benefit from our nation’s progress.
