Hey, everyone!
Today, I'm not here to update you on GDSC.
We're still working on that, promise.
But there are two things on my mind: one that bothers me, and one that amuses me, triggered by the video above.
Let's start with the amusing one:
Have you ever wondered how computers work? I mean, really work, like back in high school or elementary school when you first laid eyes on one. Did you ever ask yourself how all those computer components come together to make the magic happen.
For me, that was mind-blowing.
Even after taking all those electronics and computer organization courses, I still don't get it😊
This same curiosity extends to the field of machine learning and deep learning.
How many of you have wondered what all the AI, machine learning, deep learning, and AGI hype is about and tried to dive into how they actually work? How on earth do tools like GPT take my miserable prompt and magically give me the answer I need? How do deep learning models predict the correct answer from data they've never seen before?
Even though I know they start from simple functions and some calculus stuff I learned back in high school — functions that correct and adjust themselves based on the training data — it still blows my mind.
Scientists don't even fully understand how neural networks teach themselves to fit the training data. It's crazy!
I know most of us are focused on getting things done and don't always care about the nitty-gritty details. But hey, sometimes it's good to step back and appreciate the incredible things we're working on and using.
Anyway, that's enough deep thinking for one day, folks. I'll save the things that bother me for another time. Thanks for sticking with me through all this!
