How Wunderwaffe lose wars

The term wunderwaffe first emerged in Nazi propaganda in 1942, although the weapons themselves date back to the genesis of Nazism. After Operation Barbarossa was stopped short of Moscow and the Red Army began to gradually regain the initiative, the increasingly desperate Nazis were left scrambling to find solutions on both the battlefield and the propaganda war.

Of course, owing to the nature of fascism, their solution was not to create new strategies and tactics, as doing so would force them to admit that they had been outsmarted and outfought by the so-called “Untermensch” and that would have struck a serious blow to the idea of “Aryan” racial supremacy.

Rather than admit they had been beaten, the Nazis began to push their high tech wonder weapons or “wunderwaffe”, as almost magical relics that would allow them to defeat the uncivilized Slavic barbarians with ease. The problem is, most of these weapons didn’t work, and the few that did were so expensive and unreliable that their very existence siphoned off resources best used elsewhere.
