Britons value universities more than the BBC, Parliament and the government

A survey to find out how British people feel about higher education was conducted by King's College London.

It turned out that almost a third of respondents value British universities more than the BBC, Parliament, the government and the police. Above universities, the British public put only the National Health Service (NHS), the armed forces and the royal family.

At the same time, 74% of respondents agreed that research conducted by higher education institutions is essential for medical, technological and social innovation.

However, as The Guardian newspaper reports, only 19% believe universities should be largely funded by the state, and just 13% said political parties' stance on higher education could influence their vote in elections.

UK's main parties ditch candidates over election betting probe

Britain's two main political parties on Tuesday each withdrew support for candidates who are being investigated over bets relating to the upcoming general election, as a scandal that had been limited to the governing Conservatives spread further.

The allegations against Conservative candidates, the first of which came two weeks ago, have overshadowed Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's efforts to persuade the public to back him at a July 4 election which polls show he is on course to lose.

The Conservative Party on Tuesday pulled support from Craig Williams, a close aide to Sunak, and Laura Saunders due to alleged bets placed on the timing of the election.

Hours later, the Labour Party said it had suspended one of its candidates, Kevin Craig, after being told by the country's gambling regulator that it was investigating him over an alleged bet on the result in the area where he is standing for election.

Prosecutors' office recommends opening a criminal case against Boeing — BBC

The US Justice Department has until 7 July to decide whether to open a criminal case against aircraft manufacturer Boeing, prosecutors have recommended.

The company allegedly failed to fulfil its obligations under a 2021 settlement agreement that protected it from criminal prosecution for the deadly 737 MAX crashes in 2018 and 2019 that killed 346 people.

The obligations were for Boeing to pay $2.5bn in compensation to the victims' families, and after three years, prosecutors had to ask the court to drop criminal charges.

Last week, relatives of the victims called on the prosecutor's office to demand a $25bn fine from Boeing and to initiate criminal proceedings.

Mother killed her two children 'because she didn't want her husband to have them', court told

A mother dialled 999 and told the operator "I just killed my two kids" after attacking them with a knife, a court has been told.

Veronique John killed her seven-year-old daughter Elizabeth and 11-year-old son Ethan because she did not want her husband to have them, prosecutors told Nottingham Crown Court.

The trial-of-facts hearing heard John stabbed Ethan more than 20 times and inflicted brain damage on her daughter Elizabeth, before heading to a car wash in a dressing gown to stab her partner Nathan John in the stomach.

The charity shop worker allegedly told police who arrived at her home in Stoke-on-Trent on 11 June last year: "If you have a gun shoot me. I am not a monster - he was going to take them from me."

The court was told John and her husband had experienced profound difficulties in their relationship and she had not wanted him to have an internet-enabled phone.

Apple Postpones AI Feature for iOS 18 in EU

Apple has decided to delay the introduction of a new AI feature in iOS 18 for users in the European Union. This decision comes in response to the EU's Digital Markets Act, which was adopted in 2022. The Act requires large IT companies to provide third-party developers access to "core technologies" and prohibits the restriction of payment methods.

Apple expressed concerns that the current regulations create uncertainty around the new features of iOS 18 and pose potential threats to user privacy. As a result, the company has opted to postpone the rollout of this AI feature in the EU while they assess the implications of the Act.
