📸 Ep 21: Demera 🎉
They had seen pictures of it before. The towering fire. The smoke climbing into the evening sky. The crowds gathering beneath it. The whole city seeming to glow around the Demera. But pictures had never quite captured what it felt like to stand there. She held up her phone, trying to fit everything into one frame—the lights of Addis behind them, the thousands of people gathered around the celebration, and the enormous Demera rising into the sky in a blaze of gold and orange. He leaned closer, his arm around her waist.
“Got it?”
“Almost.”
She looked at the screen.
Then at him.
Then back at the fire.
“Okay,” she said, smiling. “Now I want one where we're actually looking at it.”
So they turned away from the camera. For a moment, they simply stood there together, watching the flames dance higher against the evening sky. There was something beautiful about being present for something that belonged to a place, a people, and a tradition long before they ever arrived. He squeezed her hand.
“Another one?”
She smiled.
“Another one.”
And just like that, another little square on their life together was filled in.
Meskel.
Demera.
We were there.✨
