REWILDING OF THE WORLD.
A PRESENTATION BY DAVID FOREMAN

Dave Foreman is perhaps
bes
t known for co-founding Earth First!, but he also co-founded the Wildlands Project, the Rewilding Institute, and the NMWA. In this short presentation he explains a lot of different ecological factors that goes with rewilding and explains complex subjects, simply.

The birth of the radical environmental movement is captured in this short, poetic film on Earth First’s legendary direct action at Glen Canyon Dam in March of 1981. The film contains one of the only interviews ever given by the late, great, Monkey Wrench Gang author Edward Abbey along with his classic speech from the back of a pick-up truck.

Produced by Christopher (Toby) McLeod, Glenn Switkes and Randy Hayes.

THE CRACKING OF GLEN CAYON DAM, MARCH 1981:

In Edward Abbey’s 1975 novel, The Monkey Wr
e
nch Gang, a group of eco-saboteurs plot to blow up the Glen Canyon Dam, which they see as violating a beautiful, wild river. Six years later, a radical new environmental group, Earth First! held its first public protest, dropping a 300-foot plastic “crack” down the side of Glen Canyon Dam. Earth First! contended that mainstream environmental groups were too moderate in the face of the continued destruction of wilderness in the American West.

REDWOOD SUMMER: WHERE THE 90S BEGIN.

Organized in 1990 by Earth First! and the Industrial Workers of the World, Redwood Summer was a three-month movement of environmental activism led by Judi Bari aimed at protecting old-growth redwood trees from logging by northern california timber companies and was part of the Timber Wars of the 1990s.

Come one come all to the 2024 Earth First! Summer Gathering!  Earth First! has been a proving ground for environmental resistance and direct action for almost half a century. As we enter new epochs of ecological breakdown, social upheaval and increasing state repression, we invite all those who would see the wild flourish to gather, connect, learn and explore what’s to be done during an escalating crisis of capital and what worlds we can build together amidst the ruins of empire.

Dates: July 2-9.  This summer the gathering will take place on occupied Mohican, Haudenosaunee, Lenape and Schaghticoke lands, colloquially known as the Hudson Valley.  The nearest travel hubs will be Albany & New York City  We are currently seeking workshop, panel and other presentation proposals.  We are also looking for possible sites.

write earth first at: hotEFsummer@proton.me with suggestions for either!

ECODEFENSE: A FIELD GUIDE TO MONKEYWRENCHING (3RD EDITION)

Dedicated to Edward Abbey and inspired by his Monkeywrench Gang , this is a manual on sabotage of establishment property. It carries the standard disclaimer "for entertainment proposes only.

(NOTE: this book is not very Animal Liberation focused this is extremely Earth Liberation oriented, (although some tactics and the security chapter are span both))

When we began work on the Third Edition (of ecodefense) we asked Dave Foreman for any thoughts he might offer to today's reader of Ecodefense. He responded:

Is your act a strategic one, or is it merely an inarticulate yell, conveying only rage, alienation, and despair?

Monkeywrenchers must constantly ask them selves:
Who is my audience? What is my message?

Will this deter destruction?

Are there legal means not yet used?

"I used to think the top global environmental problems were biodiversity loss, ecosystem collapse and climate change. I thought with 30 years of good science we could address those problems, but I was wrong. The top environmental problems are selfishness, greed and apathy - and to deal with these we need a spiritual and cultural transformation and we scientists don't know how to do that."

- Gus Speth

EARTH FIRST! THE POLITICS OF RADICAL ENVIRONMENTALISM (FULL DOCUMENTARY)

this is the overall the best examination of Earth First! Filmed at and around the time of the 1987 Grand Canyon Round River Rendezvous.

At some point we must draw a line across the ground of our home and our being, drive a spear into the land, and say to the bulldozers, earthmovers, government and corporations, "thus far and no farther." If we do not, we shall later feel, instead of pride, the regret of Thoreau, that good but overly bookish man, who wrote, near the end of his life, 'If I repent of anything it is likely to be my good behavior.

- Ed Abbey
