“The Protestant Church persistently and repeatedly claims that Reichsmarschall Hermann Göring is a Protestant Christian and protector of Protestantism. As proof, they tell the story that Hermann Göring was to be the godfather for the seventh child of a fellow national [i.e., a German citizen]. It is said that he agreed to this request on the condition that the child be baptized.
I investigated this rumor weeks ago and determined that Hermann Göring had indeed been approached to be a godfather. In his reply letter, Hermann Göring gave permission to be named as godfather to the Church as well, if necessary. However, he stated that no conclusions were to be drawn from this fact. In itself, this is a perfectly clear matter. It requires the training of a Christian to read anything else into it.”

A local group leader observed that one of the presiding judges of the Gau court frequently goes to church on Sundays with a hymnbook in hand and sends his children to the Protestant kindergarten.
The presiding judge of the Gau court—instead of correcting the party member under his disciplinary authority—now defended the behavior of the presiding judge [of the court chamber] in lengthy, Sunday-like explanations, arguing that he only “goes to church about once a month.” He then further pointed out that according to the program of the NSDAP, the party still stands on the ground of “positive Christianity.”
As long as party members who exert considerable influence over the orientation of others remain themselves so cheerfully bound by denominations, the denominations certainly do not yet face the danger of losing their position within the NSDAP.”
