A 24-year-old Sri Lankan migrant worker, Anojan Sivarasa, has been sentenced to death in Saudi Arabia for blasphemy over a Facebook comment insulting the Prophet Muhammad.

Sivarasa deleted the comment and posted an apology, but screenshots were sent to his employer, leading to his arrest in July.

He was initially sentenced to five years in prison and fined 3 million Saudi riyals, but prosecutors appealed for the case to be handled under Sharia law, and an appellate court imposed the death penalty on 17 September.

Sri Lanka is seeking clemency, with President Anura Kumara Dissanayake promising to pursue a pardon and a legal delegation travelling to Saudi Arabia.

Sivarasa's family says it has received no news from him since 28 September, while Saudi authorities have announced no execution date.

Two commercial ships were hit by drones off Bulgaria, sinking one in the first reported attack on shipping in its economic zone.
The Togo-flagged Alfa Watan sank about 70 nautical miles off Bulgaria, with its crew still missing.

The second vessel, Able, caught fire and its 18 crew were rescued, some injured.

The origin of the drones remains unknown.

BIG: France and Germany sent a joint letter to von der Leyen demanding a new EU "kill switch" that could immediately cut a country off the single market over unfair trade practices — clearly aimed at China, though unnamed.

The tool would activate within days, not years, and could range from blocking a single product to excluding an entire country.

Germany's sign-on is the big shift: it went from protecting its China trade to co-authoring the toughest EU trade proposal yet.

The EU's goods deficit with China hit €360 billion last year.

Separately, the UK is reviewing but has not yet imposed tariffs on Chinese EVs, despite EU pressure to align.

Russia's Foreign Minister Lavrov on Afghanistan:

The powerful military machine of the United States and its NATO allies broke against the fighting spirit and resilience of the Afghan people. The occupiers were forced to flee.

The national government that came to power, led by the Taliban movement, brought the country’s territory under its control and, it must be acknowledged, has governed it quite successfully.

Afghan security forces are waging an uncompromising fight against Islamic State and other terrorist groups.

It is in our common interest to help strengthen Kabul’s counterterrorism capabilities by providing material, technical and expert assistance and maintaining contacts between intelligence services and security agencies.

The Conservative Party in the UK has unveiled plans for a £10 billion air and missile defense system dubbed the “Britannia Shield,” modelled partly on Israel’s Iron Dome.

The system would combine advanced radar, upgraded command systems, interceptor missiles and counter-drone technology, while significantly increasing Britain’s missile stockpiles.

Shadow defense secretary James Cartlidge said it would protect critical infrastructure, military bases, UK territories and overseas bases, with an initial deployable capability planned within the first term of a future Conservative government.

🇾🇪❌🇸🇦 — The Houthis (Ansarallah) announced that they launched three major missile and drone operations against Saudi Arabia in response to 60 Saudi air and missile strikes on Yemen over the past 24 hours.

The Houthis warned international airlines to stop using Saudi airspace, declaring it an operational zone for their forces while exempting the airspace over the holy cities of Mecca and Medina.

🇺🇸🇱🇹⚡️ — Reporter: Lithuania has invited the U.S. to establish a permanent U.S. base in Lithuania.

Trump: We will certainly look at it. I know so many people in Lithuania. They are great people.

🇺🇸🇸🇦🇾🇪🇾🇪⚡️ — Reporter: What's your view about the Saudi-Yemeni counterattack against the Houthis?

Trump: It will all work out very well.

🇺🇸🇬🇧🇮🇷⚡️ — Reporter: Do you think there's a risk that Iran has brought combat drones into the UK?

Trump: I can't tell you that. If they did they'll suffer greatly.

🇺🇸🇬🇧🇮🇷⚡️ — Reporter: What was the threat that prompted you to move those planes out of the UK?

Trump: We had an idea that there might be a threat, and why would I leave them there? It costs very little money to move them. We had a threat. We know the people who made the threat.

Reporter: Are they linked to Iran?

Trump: They would be linked to Iran.

🇺🇸🇷🇺⚡️ — Reporter: Are you concerned about the plague outbreak in Russia?

Trump:
I am. I hate to see them having it. That's a disease we used to be able to control. But somehow those microbes have gotten stronger and smarter. They're like an army. We will help Russia.

🇺🇸🇬🇧⚡️ — Reporter: Is the UK still a safe space for U.S. forces?

Trump: I think it is, and I have a very good relationship with your new prime minister. He's liberal, very liberal, but I hear he's gonna open up North Sea oil. If he does that, you're gonna have a rich country, if he doesn't you're gonna have a bankrupt country.

🇺🇸🇷🇺⚡️ — Reporter: What is the U.S. going to do about the risk of plague coming from Russia?

Trump: We're looking at it very strongly. The microbes and the germs have gotten stronger. We will help them.

🇺🇸🇮🇷🇺🇦🇷🇺⚡️ — President Trump:
One way or the other, the [Iran] war is going to end very soon.

We're bringing out record amounts of oil in the Hormuz Strait. One of the problems we have is the refineries in Russia are being hit pretty hard.

That's a problem, but it's all working out very well.
🇺🇸🇮🇱🇦🇪🇮🇷⚡️ — Reporter: On Flydubai, do you think Iran was responsible for that terrorist attack?

Trump: I do. I personally do.

🇺🇸🇸🇦🇮🇷⚡️ — Democrat Senator Chris Murphy says two Iranian drones caused “extensive” damage to the U.S. Embassy in Riyadh during the overnight attack on March 3.

Murphy, who visited the damaged embassy while in Riyadh, said the attack could have resulted in mass American casualties had it occurred during the day.

He cited the strike as an example of the Trump administration’s lack of preparedness for the war, accusing it of failing to adequately protect U.S. diplomats and military personnel.
