NEW SCAMMER TACTICS IN SOUTHEAST ASIA:
There have been many cases related to hacking victims’ email accounts and resetting their phones.
Method 1 (Phishing):
• Victims are tricked with offers of lucrative prizes by visiting a specific website. Once they enter their details, such as Gmail credentials, they are prompted to change their account password on the website. When this happens, the hacker removes the victim’s phone reset option and unlinks all of their devices.
Method 2 (Game Selling):
• Selling gaming accounts, such as for MLBB (Mobile Legends: Bang Bang) and Free Fire. The seller offers the account, and the buyer (who is actually the hacker) asks for Gmail login access under the pretense of verifying that the seller isn’t a scammer. Once the buyer (hacker) gains access to the account, they reset the victim’s phone via Gmail, change the password, and unlink all details and devices.
What Happens After They Gain Gmail Access?
• The hackers will message the victim and blackmail them. If the victim doesn’t pay the demanded amount, the hackers threaten to sell sensitive information like work data or confidential files stored in the email.
Why Do They Reset the Victim’s Phone?
• This prevents the victim from verifying their devices to regain access or ensures the victim is completely locked out of their accounts.
