🎙 Russia's President Vladimir Putin's answers to questions from journalist Pavel Zarubin (January 24, 2025, Moscow)

❓Question: Mr President, newly inaugurated President Trump has made multiple statements about a possible meeting with you and prospects for a Ukrainian settlement. I would like to know what you think about this

💬 President Putin: Indeed, the US President has made many statements to this effect.

My first point is that Russia has never turned down contacts with the US administration, and it is not our fault that the previous administration chose not to establish such contacts. I have always had business-like, strictly business-like, but at the same time pragmatic and trust-based, I would say, relationships with the current President of the United States.

All I can say is that we hear the current President say he is ready to work together. We remain open to that.

Regarding talks about Ukraine, we have consistently made it clear, and I wish to underscore it one more time, we remain open to them. Here, too, certain matters need our particular attention.

For instance, it is well known that back when he was a fairly legitimate head of state, the current leader of the Kiev regime issued an executive order prohibiting talks. How can talks be resumed now that they have been outlawed?

This meeting is taking place in the building of Moscow University. As you may be aware, I am a trained lawyer. I graduated from the law department of St Petersburg University, formerly Leningrad University. I can tell you that if talks begin based on the existing legal framework, they would be, strictly speaking, illegitimate, meaning that the outcomes of such talks could likewise be declared illegitimate.

The current Kiev regime appears quite content to receive hundreds of billions from its benefactors and – excuse me for using this homely phrase – to pig out on this money like there is no tomorrow. However, it shows little haste in acting on the instructions issued by its sponsors – and we know that they have indeed issued such instructions – to rescind the executive order banning talks.

Nonetheless, I am of the opinion that, ultimately, those who provide the funding should compel him to act, and I believe he will have no choice but to comply. Until this executive order is rescinded, it is rather difficult to talk about starting and, more importantly, finishing these talks in a proper way. Preliminary plans may, indeed, be outlined, but engaging in serious talks remains a particularly difficult proposition, especially considering the ban imposed by the Ukrainian side.

Overall, we may have quite a few common points with the current US administration and we could jointly look for solutions to the key issues of today, including strategic stability and the economy, by the way.

So, indeed, it makes sense for us to meet based on the realities of today, to sit down and discuss without haste the areas that are of interest to the United States and Russia. We are ready to do that. But, again, this, first of all, depends on the decisions and choices of the current US administration.

💬 Russia’s MFA Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova:

The US Department of State has banned American missions abroad from displaying LGBT flags (movement recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation). Now it is forbidden to display any flags other than the US national flag. An employee who violates the new instructions will be subject to disciplinary action, including termination of the contract.

Now, these banners can be seen only over the embassies of the EU countries, which were once again played off and left alone with the problems.

🇷🇺🇨🇳 President of Russia Vladimir Putin and President of the People’s Republic of China Xi Jinping held talks via videoconference (January 21, 2025)

💬 President Putin: President Xi Jinping, my dear friend,

I am sincerely pleased to greet you and to have the opportunity to speak with you at the beginning of the year, continuing our good tradition of reviewing the work done over the past period and outlining new plans for the development of the comprehensive partnership and strategic cooperation between Russia and China.

I agree with you that cooperation between Moscow and Beijing is based on common national interests in many spheres and shared views on what relations between major powers should be like.

We are developing our ties on the basis of friendship, mutual trust and support, equality and mutual benefit. These ties are self-sufficient, as they do not depend on any domestic political factors or the current global situation. Their all-round strengthening fully meets the goals of the comprehensive development of Russia and China and the improvement of our peoples’ well-being.

I believe that the past year was very good for us. We widely celebrated the 75th anniversary of our diplomatic relations. During my visit to China in May last year, we jointly launched a large-scale project – the cross-years of Russian and Chinese culture.

We held useful talks on the sidelines of the SCO Summit held in Astana in July, as you have pointed out just now. Of course, I was happy to meet with you in Kazan last October. I would like to take this opportunity to once again thank you for supporting Russia’s #BRICS Chairmanship.

We coordinate our actions across various multilateral institutions, including the United Nations and its Security Council, the #SCO, the #G20 and #APEC. We stand united in advocating for a more just multipolar world order and work to ensure indivisible security both in the Eurasian space and globally.

It can be said confidently that our foreign policy ties and Russia and China's joint efforts objectively play a major stabilising role in international affairs.

📈 By the end of the year, despite the negative external influence, we were able to achieve strong new performance indicators in trade. Although we have only drawn the balance for the first 11 months as of yet, our trade showed a growth of over seven percent, reaching over $220 billion. According to the Chinese data, the total figure for the year was nearly $245 billion. China remains our primary trade partner, while Russia confidently ranks fifth among China's trading partners.

China is the largest consumer of Russian energy resources. We hold the first place in terms of oil exports to the country. Five years ago, we launched the Power of Siberia gas pipeline together, and today, Russia has become the leading supplier of natural gas to China. In December 2024, we signed a roadmap for a comprehensive programme of cooperation on fast neutron reactors and closing the nuclear fuel cycle, which is the nuclear power technology of the future.

Successful joint projects are being implemented in industry, transport, agriculture and other sectors. Holding Made in Russia fairs in various Chinese provinces has proven to be an effective practice.

🤝 Our humanitarian ties are expanding. Over 130 events have been held in both countries so far under the Cross Culture Years project, and this only includes the Russian events programme. Tourist flows are growing in both directions, and sports and educational exchanges are on the rise.

Mr President, this year we are preparing to solemnly celebrate the 80th Anniversary of the Great Victory. Its memory is sacred for both our nations, which fought deadly battles against the aggressors and defeated the enemy at the cost of numerous lives. The ideology of fascism, Nazism and militarism must not be allowed to rear its head again. It is important to cherish and defend the historical truth together with other nations that are guided by the same belief.

🗓 On January 20, Crimea celebrates Republic Day. The holiday commemorates the referendum of 1991, when the absolute majority of Crimean residents voted to re-establish the Crimean Autonomous Republic.

👉
Crimea in history of Russia

Interesting facts:

🔸 Crimea has had a close connection with Russia for centuries. As far as in 988–989, Grand Prince Vladimir Svyatoslavich converted to Christianity in the then Tauric Chersonese. Centuries later, on April 19, 1783, Empress Catherine the Great signed a manifesto on the accession of Crimea to the Russian Empire.

🔸 The Crimean Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic (CASSR) was originally established as part of the RSFSR in 1921. In 1945 it became the Crimean Region. In 1954, Crimea was transferred to the Ukrainian SSR; First Secretary of the CPSU’s Crimean Regional Committee, Pavel Titov, opposed the move and was relieved of his post.

🔸 The sovereignty referendum, which was held on January 20, 1991 to decide on re-establishing the CASSR, was the first plebiscite in the Soviet Union’s history. Voters were asked whether they supported re-establishing the CASSR as an entity of the USSR and a participant in the Union Treaty. A total of 93% of residents voted for autonomy. In the same year, a law was passed to re-establish the CASSR.

🔸 The 1991 Crimean referendum was the first attempt to determine the future of Crimea based on the will of its residents. To a large extent, this plebiscite served as the starting point for the peninsula’s reunification with Russia in 2014.

🔸 Republic Day was established in 2009. In 2014, after Crimea’s reunification with Russia, the holiday was included in the regional law on holidays.

🔸 On March 18, 2014, President of Russia Vladimir Putin and the top officials from Crimea and Sevastopol signed the Treaty on the Accession of the Republic of Crimea to Russia in full accordance with the results of the referendum held on March 16, 2014, where 96% of Crimean voted FOR the peninsula’s reunification with Russia.

Ever since #CrimeaIsRussia once again and forever will be henceforth.

⚡️ Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova’s response to a media question regarding recently exposed atrocities by neo-Nazis in the Kursk Region

❓ Question: Yesterday, it was revealed that the Russian military had discovered, in a cellar in the village of Russkoye Porechnoye, Kursk Region, bodies of civilians tortured and mercilessly killed by neo-Nazi invaders. Reportedly, those were maimed bodies of seniors who, evidently, were unable to resist. The images released by the media show bruises, bullet wounds, and tied arms and hands. Can this be commented on at all from a human point of view? Do you have any words for this?

💬 Maria Zakharova: True, the heart-wrenching images released by the media are hard to comment on from a human point of view. Naturally, it is beyond all logical explanations and understanding.

These atrocities are simply another outrageous manifestation of the terrorist and Nazi nature of the Kiev regime. Driven by its malicious military and political impotence at the front, it once again committed a cannibalistic massacre of civilians.

This is exactly what the countries of the collective West and their politicians, who personally cover and encourage Kiev’s Nazis, expect from the Banderites. They cynically turn a blind eye to their criminal acts, continue to authorise arms supplies to the Kiev regime and block attempts at international investigations of its crimes. In a joint and disciplined manner, they pretend that nothing terrible is happening, although this constitutes a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law and the Geneva Conventions.

❗️ All this confirms once again that the extermination of anything Russian is part of the European values that, as the “civilised” sponsors of the Banderites claim, the Kiev regime is defending.

This is why it is obvious that this time again, we will not hear any intelligible reaction to these cruel murders of civilians from such international entities as the OSCE, the United Nations and its specialised agencies. Their secretariats controlled by the West keep their deliberate silence or say meaningless generalities about being “against violence,” while actually covering for the killings of residents of peaceful villages and towns, which makes them accomplices to those atrocities.

We realise that there is no point in calling on those who are tightly stuck in the Western grip and are not going to do anything to establish justice, and to find and punish those responsible.

☝️ We will do it ourselves. The investigative authorities of the Russian Federation will carry out all the necessary actions to identify the perpetrators who will be duly and inevitably held accountable and sentenced to real imprisonment terms, as it happens with many other exposed crimes of the Kiev regime.

🌟 #OnThisDay 80 years ago, on January 17, 1945, the Red Army liberated Warsaw from the Nazis during #WWII.

Starting 1940, there were the two factions of the national resistance movement in Poland, actively fighting against the Nazi occupants — 'Armia Krajowa' (supporters of Jozef Pilsudski whose tactics to play along with Hitler against the USSR eventually led to Poland's losing its sovereignty), and 'Armia Ludowa', which represented Poland’s working class. Unlike the nationalist militants and bandits from 'Armia Krajowa' subordinate to the Polish government-in-exile in London, 'Armia Ludowa' was the country's peoples' army that represented the majority and broader population of Poland.

By early 1945, the Red Army successfully expelled the Nazi invaders from the Soviet territory and was already liberating Eastern Europe, which was back then still under the occupation.

Before engaging the final battle of WWII — the Battle of Berlin — and launching the offensive on Nazi Germany, the Soviet forces had to crush the enemy on the territory of Poland. The fascists had deployed there a formidable military force — 30 Wehrmacht divisions whose strength was up to 560,000 officers and soldiers, equipped with about 5,000 artillery guns and mortars, 1,220 tanks and other armoured vehicles. The Nazis established in Poland seven lines of defence between the Vistula and the Oder rivers, with 300 to 500 kilometres in depth.

The Red Army was tasked with an extremely difficult mission — to breach multi-echelon Nazi defences on Poland's territory, reach the pre-war German border along the Oder river and thus create favourable conditions for future strategic offensive on Berlin. The main blow during that operation was directed on Warsaw, Poland's capital, occupied by Nazis since September 28, 1939.

⚔️ On January 12, 1945, the Vistula-Oder offensive of the 1st Byelorussian and 1st Ukrainian fronts (commanded by legendary Marshals of the #SovietUnion Georgy Zhukov and Ivan Konev respectively) was launched. The Soviet forces advanced rapidly westward, decisively breached German defences in Poland, covered up to 30 kilometres each day.

By January 14, the Red Army finally reached the outskirts of the city, so the battle for Warsaw began. The Soviet millitary command made a principal decision before that battle — 'Wojsko Polskie' (the Polish Armed Forces; back in 1944, it was enforced with the units of 'Armia Ludowa') was supposed to be the first to enter Warsaw during the operation. So, polish soldiers were liberating their homeland fighting the fascists side-by-side with the Red Army comrades; later they also fought together against the enemy in Berlin and Prague, bringing our Common Victory over Nazism closer.

On January 16, Soviet forces reached Warsaw from the north, forcing Nazis to retreat deep into the city across the Vistula River. The 2nd Guards Tank Army was tasked with breaching the city defences from the West near the town of Sochaczew. 'Wojsko Polskie' units also engaged the battle and blocked Warsaw from the South, thus cutting off the Nazis’ all possible escape routes westward.

Surrounded from the north and the south, the Nazi garrison in Warsaw suffered one defeat after another. Realising that further resistance was futile, the occupants tried unsuccessfully to flee, but most of the German troops surrendered to the Red Army and Polish soldiers.

🎖 On January 17, at 3 pm, the battle for Warsaw finally ended. The capital of Poland was liberated from fascists invaders. Freed from the shackles of Nazism, the Polish nation became independent and secured its sovereignty.

🕯According to WWII historians, about 200,000 Soviet soldiers perished while liberating Warsaw, sacrificing their lives for the sake of freedom of the Polish nation. On June 9, 1945, the Medal for the Liberation of Warsaw was established and then awarded to over 700,000 people.
