"When home education is seen in its proper place, seen as a gift, a blessing, an act of stewardship, and when it’s embraced in humility, it’s a lovely thing.”

"We give advice by the bucket, but take it by the grain."

"Children deserve to grow and learn in a place & alongside a force that is as wild and alive as they are."

First watermelon is officially harvested. Kiddo is beyond excited!!

"Kids need time to be bored; That is how creativity is born."

Having 7 sons, trying to keep them busy so they don't tear your house down and giving them the gift of boredom can be a daunting task but their creativity never ceases to amaze us.

"Happiness is like a butterfly, the more you chase it, the more it will evade you, but if you notice the other things around you, it will gently come and sit on your shoulder."

"Duty makes us do things well, but love makes us do them beautifully."

"The greatest fine art of the future will be making of a comfortable living from a small piece of land."

The last several storms came with damaging winds and our sunflowers took a big hit. So today we started harvesting the fallen ones. The flowers will be hung to dry and seeds collected. The stalks will also be dried for future garden stakes.

Our goats will be in an absolute panic trying to get to their shelter when it starts to rain.. Also our goats because they see leaves over the pond... 😅

Recent heavy storms took out part of our trellis for our tomatoes. Truthfully we planted way too many, way too close together this year and they were already an overgrown heavy mess before the storm. We even contemplated just scrapping them and trying to start over because it was such an overwhelming mess.

We ultimately decided to repair and add extra bracing to the original trellis and gathered scrap material from other parts of our farm to create an arch for added trellis, then spent the rest of the day tying up tomatoes to start training them to go up and over since it's still early in the season and we have a feeling they aren't done growing yet.

A small lesson and example that embues the very heart of homesteading. Live, learn, adapt, repurpose, and overcome.

It's not the prettiest thing we've made but it's only crazy if it doesn't work!

With all the rain we've gotten the last few days the watermelons have exploded in size!

Having 7 growing boys that need a lot of protein, eggs are an essential part of our diet. Chickens of course are our primary source of eggs as they lay through out most of the year followed by ducks. Geese, turkeys, and guinea fowl are seasonal layers so we mostly get to enjoy them during the spring. A beautiful variety of colors and sizes are just an added bonus.

Chicken eggs on the top. Goose, turkey, duck, and guinea egg on the bottom.

Post rain snack for this black swallowtail caterpillar.

"Without rain, there is no life."

"Advice from a sunflower. Be bright, sunny, and positive. Know your roots. Spread seeds of happiness. Rise, shine, and hold your head up high. Keep on growing. Even on the darkest days, stand tall and find the sunlight."

Another small batch of tomato sauce today. This time I added some eggplant too!

"Nature and children are natural playmates; they're both wild and messy, unpredictable and beautiful."
