Law Seeks to Ban Public Officials From Making Polymarket Bets on Upcoming Bloodshed, Because Apparently We Live in a Complete Dystopia
Futurism (RSS)

Bad news, war profiteers: efforts are underway in the US to ban public officials from placing Polymarket and Kalshi bets based on inside information —including ghoulish wagers on the death and destruction they know will follow military action.

Proposed to the US senate on Thursday, the new legislation would effectively ban any public official from placing wagers on prediction markets using nonpublic information. The individuals covered include employees at government agencies, regulatory workers, congressional staffers — and, of course, lawmakers and the president.

Should the bill pass, penalty fines would start off at $500, but could be as much as double the profit made on successful bets.

As Indiana senator Todd Young told the New York Times, prediction markets “create incentives for elected officials or other well-placed public...

Top ICE Official Falling Apart Medically Due to Stress of Getting Yelled At
Futurism (RSS)

Look — it doesn’t matter if your job is supervising a burger joint or managing an office; it’s hard being the boss.

But if your job is to oversee the guys rounding up families by the truckload, the stress is evidently so high it can take a legitimate medical toll, at least if you’re acting Immigration and Customs Enforcement direct Todd Lyons.

According to bombshell reporting by Politico, Lyons has had at least two stress-related hospital visits during his time as acting head, both of which were overnight stays. On top of the hospitalizations, people close to Lyons told the outlet his general stress levels have been so high that they’re actively hindering his ability to make decisions for the agency.

Much of that stress seems to be a result of intense pressure from the White House, especially Donald Trump’s foreign policy lackey Stephen Miller. According to Politico, Miller has made a habit of...

Scientists Intrigued by Microbe That That Makes Mice Swole
Futurism (RSS)

A special gut microbe helped mice get jacked, researchers found. Because this microbe is found in humans, it raises the possibility that it could help us get stronger, too.

For now, that remains unproven. But the work, a new study in the journal Gut, provides a compelling case for creating a probiotic that can help with maintaining strength and fitness as we age, the researchers argue, or combat muscle-wasting disorders.

“Taken together, our findings provide solid evidence confirming the existence of an gut-muscle axis in which this identified bacterium positively modulates muscle metabolism and muscle strength,” said coauthor Jonatan Ruiz, a professor in the Department of Physical Education and Sport at the University of Granada, in a statement about the work.

Until now, the connection between muscle strength and gut microbiota was unclear, even though it’s well established that these bacteria influence our...

Sharks Showing Unusually High Levels of Cocaine
Futurism (RSS)

The expression “coked to the gills” has never been more apt.

Scientists from Brazil have discovered that sharks swimming in the Bahamas are testing positive for a potpourri of substances, ranging from caffeine to cocaine and painkillers — as if they, too, are ready for a party in an island paradise.

The implications of the findings, detailed in a study in the journal Environmental Pollution, make for quite the comedown. That the substances are turning up in detectable quantities in sharks points to an “urgent need to address marine pollution in ecosystems often perceived as pristine,” the authors warned in the study, with divers in the area being the most likely culprit.

“It’s mostly because people are going there, peeing in the water and dumping their sewage in the water,” study lead author Natascha Wosnick, a biologist with the Federal University of Paraná in Brazil, told Science News.

Wosnick’s team conducted a...

Scientist Thawing Out Fragments of His Friend’s Cryogenically Preserved Brain
Futurism (RSS)

Shortly after the influential biogerontologist L. Stephen Coles was declared legally dead in 2014, his brain was put on ice, sealed in a vat in Arizona. For over 10 years it sat there, held at -146 degrees Celsius, or nearly -295 degrees Fahrenheit.

The brain — or chunks of it, to be exact — finally saw the light of day when Greg Fahy, acryobiologist and friend of Coles’, began a biopsy over a decade after the man’s death. Despite having been frozen at such extreme temperatures, Fahy told MIT Technology Review that his friend’s brain is “astonishing well preserved.”

When he died, Coles requested his brain be preserved and studied at a later date. According to Popular Mechanics, he was one of the first patients in the world to opt for brain-only cryopreservation, sometimes categorized as “neuropreservation” — a grisly procedure that involves decapitating the subject after death and freezing...

China Built the World’s Largest Outdoor Escalator, and It’s a Modern Marvel That Looks Like It Never Stops Rising Into the Sky
Futurism (RSS)

Now officially taking rides: an over-a-half-mile long escalator that stretches ever upward in a mountainous city in China’s Chongqing municipality.

Called the “Goddess” escalator, its endeavors towards a suitably heavenly domain. The absurd architectural feat cuts through the center of the city in Wushan, starting from the bottom of a steep bank and rising straight into the sky, which it almost seems to touch; footage of the marvel, while impressive, struggles to capture its sheer scale.

End to end, it takes almost 21 minutes to ascend, the Financial Times reports; it’s almost certainly the world’s largest of its kind.

“As far as I know, there are no similar projects nationwide, either exceeding or equal to ours, either under construction or already started,” Huang Wei, head of the design team for the project and an engineer at China Railway...

Protesters Stage Unsettling Demonstration in Front of Palantir’s Office
Futurism (RSS)

Hundreds of protestors descended on Palantir’s unmarked office building in downtown Manhattan over the weekend. Organized by the grassroots AIDS group ACT UP New York, they rallied at the New York AIDS memorial before marching on the surveillance company’s offices.

According to photos published by the Advocate, protestors came dressed in flashy outfits and brandishing signs with hardline slogans. “Palantir: ICE and war enabler and profiteer,” read one.

When protestors got to Palantir’s office, however, they collapsed on the pavement, staging a “die-in” — a disruptive form of protest often reserved for urgent human rights struggles.

Die-ins are a common protest tactic in the United States, famously used by LGBTQ activists — including ACT UP — during the AIDS epidemic of the 1980s to demand federal intervention from the Reagan administration. The practice has since become widespread at protests...

Data From Chinese Moon Lander Shows Signs of Peculiar Radiation “Cavity”
Futurism (RSS)

As NASA continues to push for a permanent presence on the Moon, future space travelers will face plenty of dangers, from micrometeorite showers battering the lunar surface to the unknown effects of spending prolonged periods of time in just one sixth of Earth’s gravity.

Deep space radiation also remains a major hazard. NASA’s Artemis 2 mission, which is slated to launch as early as next week, will see astronauts venturing far beyond the Moon, reaching the furthest mankind has ever been away from home, and likely exposing them to significantly higher levels of radiation.

The fear: such cosmic rays could penetrate astronauts’ bodies and damage DNA or increase the risk of developing cancer.

But thanks to recent research by an international team of researchers, there may be a peculiar “cavity” of reduced cosmic radiation that could provide them with shelter. This cavity includes Moon and extends far...
