* PRIVATE SHELTER – RAINBOW SHELTER IN BRASOV TODAY*
We are beyond shocked and appalled at the devastating scenes that our Romanian partners were faced with earlier today. Following a call from Jason York at a Better Life Dog Rescue, we asked our partners AMP in Brasov for assistance in alerting the authorities and rescuing survivors in a private shelter on the outskirts of Brasov, the Rainbow shelter. What they encountered there is beyond comprehension. In 25 years working in Romania, our partners have never seen anything so horrific. This is particularly sickening as the dogs they were sent to help, were sponsored by well-meaning individuals and organisations, to be safe from harm and well cared for until such time as they found an adoptive family. There has been ongoing concerns over this particular shelter, and it is tragic that it took so long for something to be done. 17 surviving dogs were found, all are near death and cannot stand from starvation. 30 dead cats and 69 dead dogs have so far been found in various stages of decomposition, all in full view of the survivors. The most tragic sight of all, in all this devastation, is a room filled with unopened bags of food as well as toys, sent in good faith by dog lovers. It is clear that the animals have died of starvation, but forensics are still ongoing. Autopsies will be carried out on all the deceased animals to confirm cause of death. None of the survivors have tested positive for parvo, they are simply starving and thirsty beyond words. We are hopeful that this case will lead to prosecution and act as a legal landmark so that this can never happen again. Foreign organisations supporting foreign rescues have a responsibility of care first and foremost to the dogs and secondly to their supporters. It is so important that they do their research and visit in person, and that any concern raised should be taken seriously and investigated accordingly. The 17 survivors are now with our partners, at the Victory shelter, and we will keep you updated on their recovery. No doubt some of them will be coming to us in the UK.
