In many countries, people are now living longer than ever before. Some people say an aging population creates problems for governments. Other people think there are benefits if society has more elderly people. To what extent do the advantages of having an aging population outweigh the disadvantages?
Due to the advances in Medicine, and increased health awareness in recent years, people’s overall lifespan has significantly improved. This trend, however, has resulted in a controversial debate among people. While some find an aging population challenging for governing bodies, others believe that having many senior citizens is beneficial. In my opinion, the disadvantages of this trend are far outweighed by the advantages.
On the one hand, there is a concrete reason why some people think it is hard for the government if there are a significant number of elderlies in a country. It is a burden on the government’s budget. To be more specific, as people age and become older, they tend to struggle with different health problems. In this case, it is governments to improve healthcare system by funding to meet the high demand. Additionally, if the number of elderly people is high, it is more likely to be many retired people. This means government need to provide them with retirement pensions which, in turn, can lead to strain on the budget. Therefore, it is thought to be negative by some.
Nevertheless, the advantages older people can offer are far greater than the disadvantages. Firstly, older people often possess valuable experience and skills accumulated over their careers, meaning they can contribute to a more knowledgeable and stable workforce, enhancing productivity and quality of work. Another advantage is that they can transfer intergenerational knowledge. In other words, an aging population can help the handover of wisdom, traditions, and knowledge from older generations to younger ones, which can foster cultural continuity and preserving valuable insights. From these perspectives, the elderly play a crucial role in society.
In conclusion, despite the pressure on the budget of the government, it is worthwhile funding as old people can be helpful in terms of improving productivity in workplaces and interchanging customs amid generations.
