Apple to pay $95 million to settle claims it used Siri to eavesdrop on customers🕵️♀️ Apple has agreed to pay $95 million to settle a civil lawsuit accusing the privacy-minded company of deploying its virtual assistant Siri to eavesdrop on people using its iPhone and other trendy devices.
ℹ️ The proposed settlement filed Tuesday in an Oakland, California, federal court would resolve a 5-year-old lawsuit revolving around allegations that Apple surreptitiously activated Siri to record conversations through iPhones and other devices equipped with the virtual assistant for more than a decade.
😈 The alleged recordings occurred even when people didn't seek to activate the virtual assistant with the trigger words, "Hey, Siri." Some of the recorded conversations were then shared with advertisers in an attempt to sell their products to consumers more likely to be interested in the goods and services, the lawsuit asserted.
Well, how else does it happen that magically, after your conversation with a friend about getting a new bike, pop-up ads about “the best bikes in town” appear?🙅♂️ Apple denies any violation of the law and does not admit to the charges. However, to avoid additional legal fees, the company has agreed to settle the lawsuit.
👩⚖️ The agreement to settle the Siri spying lawsuit has received preliminary court approval.
🤑 All current or former owners of Siri devices in the U.S. whose private messages were obtained by Apple between September 17, 2014, and December 31, 2024, may receive compensation.
💸 A website will be set up within 45 days to determine who is eligible. Apple is required to provide contact information for customers who purchased devices with Siri. Claims can be submitted
until May 15, 2025, after which compensation will begin.
🪙 Each participant will be able to file a claim for up to five Siri devices, receiving up to $20 for each. The payout amount will depend on the number of valid claims.
