During period days:Eat iron-rich foods.
Rest more.
No scrolling whatsoever , protect your brain in this phase. ☝🏽
Listen to Qur’an.
Do muraja’ah.
Serve your family with intention.
Control your tongue carefully.
During menstruation, estrogen and progesterone fluctuate. This affects serotonin and dopamine. That means mood is more sensitive, emotional triggers are stronger, and mental fatigue increases. Adding sugar and scrolling during this time worsens instability.
Now let’s talk about sugar and phones, because both affect the brain in similar ways.
Sugary drinks cause rapid spikes in blood glucose. This leads to a sharp insulin release. Then blood sugar drops quickly. That crash creates:
Sleepiness
Brain fog
Irritability
Cravings
Low motivation
During Ramadan, you are already fasting many hours. If you break your fast with high sugar drinks, the spike-crash cycle becomes stronger. You feel heavy for Taraweeh, drowsy, and mentally dull. Then you may think, “My eeman is low.” But often it is blood sugar instability, not spirituality.
In period phase, insulin sensitivity can worsen slightly. Sugar spikes may feel even harsher , more bloating, more fatigue, more mood swings.
Sugar doesn’t just affect the body. It overstimulates dopamine briefly. After the spike, dopamine drops. Low dopamine feels like laziness, boredom, and lack of motivation. Again, we label it weak iman , but its also part of ignorance to the body which is an amanah.
Phones work similarly. Scrolling gives repeated micro-dopamine hits. The brain becomes overstimulated. Then when you sit with Qur’an, it feels “slow.” Your brain has been trained for rapid novelty, not depth. So you think, “I don’t feel connected.” In reality, your dopamine baseline is dysregulated.
Phone + sugar together amplify:
Drowsiness
Emotional reactivity
Impulse control issues
Reduced khushu‘
Sleep disruption
And then you end up thinking that your heart is hard.
Taking care of your body is also taking care of your eeman.
Ramadan is not just spiritual detox ,it is neurological detox. When you remove sugary drinks and reduce phone stimulation, your dopamine system recalibrates. Within days, Qur’an feels deeper. Dua feels softer. Focus improves. Emotional stability increases.
You begin to feel light again.
So protect three things fiercely:
Your night connection.
Your Qur’an portion.
Your blood sugar.
Guard your phone. Guard your sugar. Guard your tongue.
And when you slip, reset. Allah loves returners, not perfectionists 🤍
