Facts of the Brain

Your brain is big as your two fists side by side.
✔The brain looks like a wrinkly lump of grey pink jelly
✔The average weight of adult brain in air is 1500g(1.5kg), since the brain floats in cerebrospinal fluid it only weighs 50g which is comfortable
✔The human brain has about 180-200 billion neurons
✔ The brain is protected by the skull, which is made up of 22 bones
✔ Our is made up of 73-75% water
✔The right hemisphere of the brain controls the left part of the body, while the left hemisphere controls the right part of the body.
✔Your brains stop producing new neurons at about age 13 and stops growing at age 18-25
✔The brain is the most powerful organ of the human body it controls everything we do from thinking, learning, feeling emotioms, even breathing and heart rate.

“Sphenopalatine ganglioneuralgia" is the complicated medical term for what most of us call an “ice cream headache" or “brain freeze" These more easily understandable terms describe what happens when a low-temperature food, such as ice cream, makes contact with the hard palate, causing a transient but painful headache. The exact cause is unknown, but may be related to sudden constriction and then dilatation of blood vessels involving the roof of the mouth, sending painful impulses along the trigeminal nerve. The cure for brain freeze is actually very simple, and something you can do on your own. The moment you start to experience a brain freeze, press your tongue to the roof of your mouth. The heat from your tongue will transfer heat and energy to your sinuses behind your nose, which will then warm the nerve bundles that cause brain freeze. Keep your tongue firmly against the roof of your mouth until you feel the pain start to dissipate, keep your tongue for as long as it takes.

You can't get STIs(sexually transmitted infections) from toilet seats.

STIs got their name because their primary mode of transmission is through sexual activity. Yes, there are some STIs that can be transmitted via casual contact, including scabies and pubic lice, but these parasites aren’t equipped to survive on smooth, slippery surfaces. Scabies and lice can cling to towels, clothes, and beds, but not toilet seats. Bacterial and viral infections such as chlamydia, syphilis, HPV, and herpes, to name a few common ones, are transmitted via contact with infected fluids: genital secretions, semen, and blood. Contact with infected skin can also lead to STI transmission. Contact with toilets, however, won't do it. That’s because most pathogens that cause STIs can’t live outside of the human body for very long without deteriorating

Did you know that the Femur bone is six times stronger than a concrete?

Red blood cells are the key to life. They are constantly traveling through your body, delivering oxygen and removing waste. If they didn’t do their job, you would slowly die. Red blood cells contain a protein called hemoglobin that gives blood its red hue. Hemoglobin contains iron, which makes it an excellent vehicle for transporting oxygen and carbon dioxide. As blood passes through the lungs, oxygen molecules attach to the hemoglobin. When the blood passes through the body’s tissue, the hemoglobin releases oxygen to the cells. The empty hemoglobin molecules then bond with the tissue’s carbon dioxide or other waste gasses to transport them away. Over time, red blood cells get worn out and eventually die. The average life cycle of a red blood cell is only 120 days. But don’t worry! Your bones are continually producing new blood cells.
In a 70kg person, there will be about 25 × 10¹² RBCs and 750g of hemoglobin(Hb). 100ml of blood contains about 14.5g of Hb.

AMNIOCENTESIS

Amniocentesis is a diagnostic procedure in which a small amount of amniotic fluid is withdrawn using a syringe and guided by ultrasound scanning from the amniotic sac that surrounds the fetus in the uterus. This fluid contains fetal cells that can be subjected to chromosome analysis to identify chromosomal defects such as Down's syndrome or genetic analysis to look for genetic disorders such as haemophilia, cystic fibrosis, and Tay-Sachs disease. Chemical analysis of amniotic fluid can help to diagnose developmental abnormalities such as spina bifida. Rhesus incompatibility and maturity of the fetal lungs can also be checked. Amniocentesis is usually performed in the 15th-20th week of pregnancy. It slightly increases the risk of miscarriage or early rupture of the membranes and is therefore recommended only when the fetus is thought to be at increased risk of an abnormality

Cervical effacement refers to a
thinning of the cervix. It is a component of the Bishop
Score. Cervical effacement can be expressed as a percentage.
Prior to effacement, the cervix is usually about four centimeters in length. Throughout pregnancy, the cervix is tightly closed and protected by a plug of mucus. When the cervix effaces, the mucus plug is loosened and passes out. As effacement takes place, the cervix then shortens or effaces, pulling up into the uterus and becoming part of the lower uterine wall. Effacement may be measured in percentages, from 0% (not effaced at all) to 100% which indicates a paper-thin cervix. Effacement is accompanied by cervical dilation,
when a woman is 100% effaces it means she is ready to deliver.
