When a Nation Lets its People Starve
There comes a moment in every dying empire when the truth becomes too sharp to ignore:
the people in power do not care if the people survive. American families just reached that moment.
SNAP benefits for November will now be
delayed and
reduced, not because funds ran out or systems failed, but because politicians treat hunger like a bargaining chip. Washington shuts down negotiations, and #
America’s poorest pay the price. For millions, #SNAP isn’t “assistance.” It is
survival. It is children eating. It is elders staying alive. It is working families filling the gaps corporate greed keeps widening.
Instead of strengthening that lifeline,
the government chooses to weaponize it.
Because hunger isn’t just a hardship.
It’s
leverage.
A hungry population is easier to control. When you are counting pennies at the grocery store, you don’t have the energy to fight.
When you are skipping meals so your kids can eat,
you don’t have time to protest. When your benefits are delayed, you are pushed into crisis, and
crisis keeps people silent.
Both parties know this.
And both parties exploit it.
They go home to stocked kitchens, warm houses, full plates.
They don’t hear a child whisper “there isn’t enough this week.”
They don’t feel the fear of the fridge running low.
They don’t calculate every dollar in the checkout line.
They don’t live the consequences of their games.
We do.This country can fund endless war, endless surveillance, endless corporate bailouts. But
feeding the poor? Suddenly there’s a “problem.”
Suddenly the safety net becomes “negotiable.” Suddenly survival depends on the mood of Congress.
A government that allows hunger is a government that has already abandoned its people. And yet the power they count on us forgetting is simple: when the state abandons us,
we turn to each other. Community is our only insurance policy. Solidarity is our only reliable safety net.
ACTIONABLE WAYS TO RESIST STARVATION POLITICS1. Build community mutual aid.Not charity. Not nonprofits. Direct support. Groceries. Cash apps. Food runs. Rent pools.
We feed each other because the government won’t.2. Spread clear information.Teach families how to check benefits, what emergency food options exist, how to escalate cases, and how to document state failures.
Confusion is a weapon. Information is armor.3. Hold politicians publicly accountable.Name who allowed this. Name who stalled funding. Name who lied. Public shame still forces movement.
4. Treat hunger as evidence, not a statistic.Document empty fridges, delayed payments, skipped meals. This country ignores data but cannot ignore faces.
5. Make food security a non-negotiable demand.Not a partisan belief. A human right.
6. Strengthen worker power.Support unions, tenant unions, co-ops, grassroots movements. Collective power disrupts political cruelty.
7. Treat your community as your first government.Because the official one already told you exactly where you stand.
This is not just about November benefits.
This is about a government
testing how much suffering we will tolerate. This is about a
nation willing to starve its own people to score political points.
This is about dignity being held hostage.
But if they will starve us,
we will feed each other. If they will ignore us, we
will organize. If they will abandon us,
we will build something stronger than them.A government that weaponizes hunger has forfeited its right to lead.
The people remain.
Together, we are enough.Sources
