UK could legalize euthanasia in 2024
On October 16, the British parliament will consider a proposal to legalize assisted suicide for terminally ill people. Euthanasia is currently illegal and punishable by law in the UK, with a maximum prison sentence of 14 years.
As always with euthanasia. the extreme case is presented: "people facing the most unbearable end to their life a choice about what that end is like," And many, perhaps most people are probably okay with that, in principle.
The devil is in the details.
What is defined terminally ill? Last few days before death? Weeks? Months? Years?
How will social services interact with potential candidates? (We must remember that there are enormous cost savings associated with euthanasia...)
And we have all seen how this is the thin edge of the wedge in Canada and probably elsewhere. Next, terminally disabled or terminally mentally ill?
It is a very slippery slope.
